Are there any 8 to 5 low stress jobs at intel? I'm an engineer and I'm tired of being on call all the time and having to live up to unreasonable expectations. What types of roles could I move to for better work life balance? My wife keeps telling me not to move and that the easier nontechnical jobs are traps to catch burnouts and then get rid of them. Has anyone found this to be true?

Try for a position in Ted Wheelers office or any job in the city of Portland for that matter. I have friends there and the work environment has zero meritocracy, full of diversity, nothing gets done and you get to go home by 5.

@PZ3GuAq-2anl, you said it. You can run the workforce like mad when the stock is going up like crazy and the company is a darling on Wall Street and everywhere else. The Pentium ramp days were killer, but today, that's just the way it is: today, tomorrow, and twice as much next quarter/year/... Not sustainable. A business model that runs the organization on a ton of RCGs and drives them out of the company 5-10 years later will change the DNA of the company - more like a call center.

When I finally left manufacturing it was bewildering to see the huge number of grade 8-10 there were out in the office areas working 9-4, no-work weekends, flexible due-dates, lower accountability, smiles on their faces. I moved into a non-technical group that had nine grade-9/10 "directors".

Lots of people moving from the fab to IoT in AZ. Just make sure you are getting into an area that actually has products with actual customers. Otherwise, labs and testing like someone suggested. Overall the place is run by workaholics that have no human spirit and expect the same. It works when you are changing the world with Pentium, it gets old fast when everyday is the repeat of the previous day because avoidable bad decisions are made by tired, arrogant, stubborn managers who treat you like an indentured servant.
The least stressful job at Intel are the security at the lobby. They walk around during lunch to shake down their full stomached. Also being in lab is less stressful, as you deal only with machines and not politics. If you know where to look, the 10-5 workday minus that 2 hour lunch break works wonders GPTW, IMHO.
Securitas is hiring. You can be an Intel security guard.
8-5 low stress technical jobs do not exist today inside or outside of Intel. Sounds like You need a career change? May I suggest working at a m-r-j-a-a dispensary? Low stress and laid back job, exactly what you are looking for.

Why switch to a low stress job at Intel? Why not switch to a low stress job at another company? Intel is one of the last few „Management 1.0“ companies in the high tech world. Most other companies have realized that you can actually get more,productive when you work shorter hours.
And I am sorry to say, but what your wife is spouting there is the kind of b---s--- that would drive me to the brink of divorce. That‘s retarded nonsense like „Don‘t let them promote you from a technical to a management job, because the non-technical managers will conspire against you!“ or „Always change your job every three years, or else it will look like your are not flexible!“ That kind of idiotic BS is made up in boring conversations where people have nothing to say but want to say something that sounds smart anyway.
sounds like what my position had become , my answer was to leave which I did in late august....I was one of a handful left supporting an etl dw..tons of work, no plans by mgr for proper staffing...training others new to etl...totally sick of it. now my wife says i am much healthier, less stressed out...
