Thread regarding Staples Inc. layoffs

Bye bye Staples

October 24, 2017

Amazon.com Inc. launched a Prime membership service for businesses, looking to replicate in the workplace the quick delivery of online orders that made it a go-to shopping destination for households.

Shares of industrial suppliers WW Grainger Inc. and Fastenal Co., which both sell industrial and construction supplies, fell on the news. Investors are concerned the world’s biggest online retailer will use low prices and convenience to win the suppliers’ business in the same manner it took market share from book stores, electronics stores, department stores and big-box retailers.

Grainger dropped as much as 4.6 percent and Fastenal dropped as much as 4.2 percent after the announcement.

Business Prime Shipping, available in the U.S. and Germany, offers free two-day delivery to companies paying $499 to as much as $10,099 a year depending on their size, Amazon said. The subscription program could also win business from office supply stores such as Staples Inc. and Office Depot Inc.

Business-to-business transactions -- a broad category that includes pens and paper for the office as well as equipment and parts used in factories -- have been slower to shift online than retail, but could be a bigger revenue opportunity in the long term, said Andy Hoar, an analyst at Forrester Research Inc. He estimates the U.S. market will reach $1.2 trillion by 2021, up from $889 billion this year.

Amazon is indeed gaining market share. Currently, Staples NAD is losing nearly 10% market share year-over-year, while retail is down nearly 40%. Reasons include, but not limited to, products and services costing more in retail and the B2B space, and Amazon's ease of ordering. In the B2B space, Staples typically takes a loss on the sales of office supplies, which is why they're focusing on other, high margin BOSS categories, such as tech, furniture, and print.

Account consultants have already been briefed on Amazon Business Prime, which is expected to cause a disruption in the B2B space. This is why Staples is focusing on NAD, or North American Delivery, because it's believed that this space is the only business unit that can survive the "Amazon effect." This isn't even including Walmart, who is making plans to compete with Amazon in the B2B space. Their plans include duplicating Amazon's success, while positioning their retail space to an advantage. This will all be at the cost of other major retailers.

Like it or not, consumers and businesses want a high quality product and service at a low cost, and don't want to physically travel to acquire their goods. No matter how good or bad the economy was, is, and will be doing, buying habits have changed in favor of Amazon.

Online B2B sales were at about 45% of total 2016 sales. It’s probably slightly higher when you factor in all the regular Joes who order from their kitchen table but nowhere near 80%.

80% isn't remotely close to the share of sales that comes from online. How in the hell did you come up with such a wrong number?

Over 80% of sales for staples is generated now online.... where do you get 9% from? Oh, I just realized, you may be one of those “fake news” believers.

Online sales makes up about 9% of total retail and Amazon is only a fraction of that 9%, so Amazon isn't putting anyone out of business.

The media blames Amazon so the herd of dumbed down idiots doesn't figure out the economy is collapsing. We are in a recession which is turning into a depression, but the average american doesn't know it because he believes the lies spewed by the media as gospel truth, tho he would tell you he doesn't believe the media.

He does, and is too stupid to even realize he does.
