Thread regarding Enbridge Inc. layoffs

My Story

I was let go in a mass cull a few months ago. After 17 productive years with above average performance reviews and almost no absences, I was plucked from my office, given a wooden rehearsed speech, handed a package, and escorted off of the property with no opportunity to say goodbye to my colleagues. "Integrity, Safety, Respect". Yeah, right.

I had no idea it was coming, other than the general sense that 'something' was going to happen after the Spectra/Enbridge merger. My advice: If an company wide email comes out at 5am, take the day off!

What I wanted to say is that there is life after Enbridge. My skills, references, and experience landed me another good job quickly, although I can't say the same for many of my laid-off colleagues. Always keep your resume up to date and your LinkedIn profile current. Take as much company offered training as you can. And never assume it can't happen to you. Best of luck to those remaining!

Glad you have moved on.

Based on what you’ve shared and what I’ve witnessed, you fit the profile of the type of employee Al and his henchmen (which include the ELT and most of the VPs, all whipped into a frenzy by Al’s trusty RDO) are targeting: older, closer to retirement and expensive in comparison to others doing your job (because your salary was at the top of your grid and because your pension would have cost the company big bucks).

You also likely thought for yourself and were clearly not part of the in-crowd that is running the current regime. This crowd demands devotion to the prevailing ideology and complete obedience. Keep up the facade, don’t let the cracks show and you will be rewarded. Stray at your peril.

There are intriguing psychological parallels between Enbridge and Nazi Germany, both from the perspective of the leaders, the survivors and those being persecuted. Clearly more subtle, but still there.

Can’t wait for the company to become just another company again, instead of the watch-your-back chamber of horrors it is now. How long will it take?

I understand the toll this culture is taking on employees but wonder what it’s doing to the leaders, some of whom used to be human.

So happy you escaped.

You have a great attitude and I wish you the best! I won't wish you luck, because it's evident you make your own. Be well and a year from now you will be in a better place.
