Just joined. Looking at first year comp, even though Msft up 50% in the year, my comp is basically flat. Without options in the package the upside is well - almost nothing. If I was to grind away for 5yrs maybe stock kicks in something, but am I better looking elsewhere ?

Hmm - Msft was a mature company and offered options in living memory. It's previous ceo did such a poor job that the stock didn't move for a decade and hence we have stock grants....
Anyway
The problem with stock grants is the lack of large (and possibly unintended) upside. I once had 20k options at $20 - in my fantasy world I could now cash them in for $1m - no way will Msft ever hand me that in stock unless I am SVP.
At the end of the day you need to look out for yourself - you will need that $1m to pay for the house, kids college, car, tax, retirement etc. focus on where you can get it and ignore all other advice.
You are not a fit. We are a mature company, a successful one - if you looking at a comp structure you noted you may want to go look somewhere else.
Or Amazon...
Really? Maybe better for you to go to a startup with heavy options weight for comp and let someone passionate about Microsoft and services/products bring value to the company, partners, and customers. Sounds like not a good fit for you.
