Thread regarding Juniper Networks Inc. layoffs

If you are planning to leave Juniper

Here is my suggestion, to those who are planning to leave Juniper now...

  • find a job, with a start date in November (11th, 20th)

  • if Juniper decides to include you in the layoff, “take the package” with severance pay

  • if not, quit a few days after the layoff in October ( 11th or 23rd )

  • start your new job in November

The most important thing here is to get a severance package... even if it is a few weeks/months pay.

Rumors were all there for September but if you acted on your plan last month, you would probably miss the severance package this month (if there is any). Even today we are not sure about October layoff. So you have limited control over your new job hunting timeline and absolutely no control over Juniper layoff timeline. With such little control over the process, consider yourself lucky if you are able to grab a severance check on your way out, but that is not something you can engineer.

IMHO, getting a new job that makes you want to go to work in the morning is the most important thing. If you bump into something like that, say yes to hiring manage and start as soon as possible. Forget about severance check as it is not something in your control.

That said, I think the way Juniper handles layoff is seriously wrong. Keeping it a big secret and letting rumors float around damages morale/productivity everyday. With or without layoff, this is gonna cause another round of low quality.

Agree with this in theory. Problem is, job offers do not come according to my demands and Juniper's timeline of layoffs. When I quit couple of weeks back, I was aware of the oncoming cuts - but my new job offer won't wait for end-October. Either I had to take the offer when it came or wait to see if I get fired and then hope that another similar opportunity comes through. The uncertainty was too much of a stress for me and the severance package a small price to pay for the peace of mind and a job that, right now, is a hell of a lot better.
