Thread regarding DeVry Inc. layoffs

STILL A SWEATSHOP

THE COMPANY CAN CHANGE ITS NAME TO ANYTHING IT WANTS, BUT THE FACT REMAINS THAT DEVRY IS STILL A SWEATSHOP. BECAUSE:

  1. INSTRUCTORS TEACH 47 HOURS PER YEAR AS OPPOSED TO THE USUAL 24 AT OTHER COLLEGES AND UNIVERSITIES.

  2. EVEN THOUGH THEY PRETENDED TO COMPLY WITH THE HIGHER LEARNING COMMISSION'S STRONG RECOMMENDATION TO LESSEN COURSE LOAD BY GIVING TEACHERS A SESSION WITHOUT CLASSES, THEY ARE STILL REQUIRED TO DO WORK AND DOCUMENT WHAT THEY DID ON THIS SUPPOSED TIME TO RENEW.

  3. THEY USE THE BEST FACULTY FORWARD SLOGAN AS AN EXCUSE TO PUT FULL TIME TEACHERS ANY WHERE THEY WANT THEM TO GO NO MATTER HOW FAR THEY MUST TRAVEL ONE INSTRUCTOR LIVED IN ONE STATE AND WAS ASSIGNED TO A CLASS IN THAT STATE AND ANOTHER IN A NEIGHBORING STATE.

  4. INSTRUCTORS HAVE NO SAY WHATSOEVER IN WHAT COURSES THEY TEACH.

  5. REVIEWS ARE BASED ON BUDGET MORE THAN EVER BEFORE, AND LIES AND TWISTS OF THE TRUTH ARE USED BY MANAGERS TO JUSTIFY LOW CATEGORIES.

IF IT ACTS LIKE A SWEATSHOP, LOOKS LIKE A SWEATSHOP, IT'S A SWEATSHOP!!

My coworker today said something that made me LOL and reminded me of this thread. He said something like, "We are gradually moving away from our traditional sweatshop model and adopting more of a slavery methodology." He was referring to all the extra assignments and projects we get that don't count toward our load or give us any sort of compensation. Sad but true.

Having no "Session Strategy" meetings recently and then cancelling the "Townhall" is really weird even by Devry management standards.

I think some of our managers and higher ups are better off sticking to jobs like used car sales. They certainly haven't done a great job managing. Constant layoffs and cost cutting at the bottom isn't all that helpful - maybe its time to start looking at cost cutting and layoffs at the top.

Someone mentioned your upcoming town hall which I heard from one of the colleagues was cancelled. That and another comment a person mentioned about lower than normal performance reviews are breadcrumbs that something is afoot at your organization/school.

Maybe they will finally get rid of the President you have that makes over a $1 million a year to run a for profit University as a salesman from University of Phoenix. I knew him when he was there and his claim to fame is he is an English major who was trained to be a salesman....too bad he sold someone there on hiring him in as his severance will be much much more than yours! That is where all your raises are going....to his bonus and upcoming severance package!

Time for some fresh air in the sweatshop. Most campuses at least have free pies & cookies for the taking, just to keep the troops happy on a sugar high. Used to order in lunches, but those were cut--maybe a deli tray now and then. Maybe with the focus on revitalization, some of the amenities will return to the staff that are still pulling the boat (before it sinks),

"If it acts ... looks like a sweatshop," could it be that the survivors are acting to look like complacent shop workers? But then, what if it sounds and smells like such?

Hey, at least you guys have full-time faculty! I know we have about 5 or so (for 20,000 students) but not sure for how much longer....
