Intel's Real Threat: Serverless Computing

The real threat is Serverless cloud compute already going full speed ahead on Azure, AWS, and Google. With Serverless computing, the applications are written so it matters not what hardware is used – x86, ARM, or whatever comes next.

There is no need to run on or emulate x86 for these applications. Intel has the market share of that hardware right now, but the Intel footprint in the cloud data center will start to erode quickly as more and more cloud applications are developed for the Serverless environment.

Intel is conditioned to think that ARM and AMD are the enemy, but it is the big cloud providers working hardest to eliminate expensive Intel processors from the data center. The battle really is Intel versus the big cloud providers who need to reduce the cost of providing compute power. Intel can probably smack down AMD and ARM in the enterprise data center, but good luck fighting the innovation talent at Google, Amazon AWS, and Microsoft. To think otherwise at this point is just sticking your head in the sand.

Not sure why you are debating the topic, you just confirmed the point for him (albeit more desktop than server). Good enough performance at a much less cost beats highest performance at a high cost for most cloud use cases.

Setting aside the name calling, I agree there could be a threat to Intel dominance with the cloud provider serverless framework and FaaS models. An end customer who needs a web site, database, or some other applications that can be run as cloud function likely does not care what hardware is used. The underlying server could be Windows on a Qualcomm ARM, Linux on and IBM mainframe, or something in between. As a simple example, I don’t know or care what pump manufacturers my local water company uses to pump water, I only care that water comes out of the tap when I turn it on.

I was just reading about Gen-z. Industry wide consortia to unseat intel with disruptive disaggregated servers. Maybe this explains rack-scale direct leak in another post - a last gasp response?
