Thread regarding Staples Inc. layoffs

They can't just close stores willy nilly

The problem is very basic. Leases! It would cost more to get out of many leases than it would to operate some stores even if the store was losing "a little" cash. If you want to evaluate your END DATE you only need two pieces of information (maybe 3).

  1. Lease re up date

  2. Bottom line profit

The 3rd piece would be how quickly your top line sales and profit are declining if the store is currently still profitable...

Sycamore will be very aggressive in attempting to renegotiate many of these and they will have some leverage because the commercial retail space market s---s so bad. However, the three tings mentioned above are most likely the deciding factors.

Have you noticed those Harbor Freight Tools stores popping up recently. Here's a link to what they look like:

You notice any similarities? They look like old Staples store, right? This is why Staples won't mind closing stores, regardless of leases, because Harbor Fright Tools has been taking over the leases of closed Staples stores. By sub-leasing, Staples can get out where they want without worrying about their bottom line.

Seriously the retitled the CPC to PMS hahahahah.... I once worked for a company that retitled Lead associate to Key Merchandising Assistant or KMA which immediately became Kiss My A-- hahahaha

"commercial retail space market s---s so bad"

5 closed Staples locations in my old district STILL remain empty. One of them closed in 2009, just an empty building 8 years later!

"how quickly your top line sales and profit are declining if the store is currently still profitable..."

Some of these stores are only declining in sales and profit due to the fact they can not adequately serve their customers because of payroll constraints. I spoke to the copy center supervisor and ops sup in a store I used to work in and they are both extremely frustrated.

The CPC used to blow their budget away, but now with only single coverage from open to close, customers are leaving without placing orders because they can not be completed in a timely manner. The CPC (PMS now) associate has to constantly call for backup to manage the lines and help in production. This pulls managers and other associates away from helping customers on the sales floor and thus loosing more sales.

The Ops supervisor is in a similar situation as they are forced to MoD half the time they are working and they are few O/S associates working. The IS is covering register or backup CPC for half their shift. Trucks are backed up, the ZB score is in the 3s and the store can not keep associates. People quit shortly after getting hired due to low pay, low hours per week and extreme stress.
