Detroit Medical Center laid off at least 14 advanced practice nurses last month, an unusual move to reduce bedside providers that many hospitals rarely take because of patient safety concerns and difficulty in recruiting nurses.
Tenet Healthcare Corp., a Dallas-based investor-owned hospital chain that owns DMC, told Crain's in a statement that the layoffs were part of a normal evaluation on health care worker efficiency and department needs. Tenet and DMC officials declined to conduct an on-the-record interview.
But a half-dozen physicians, nurses and managers affiliated with DMC or knowledgeable about the issue tell Crain's a larger story. The sources asked that their names be withheld because they are actively employed or admit patients to DMC.
