They remodel to get the stores ready for sale or to fix things up so they can get out of their lease. Just like painting and cleaning a rental home when your lease is up.
God...don't get me started on our registers. Either over half of them are not used, or the ones that are used crash at least once a day and yeah, as others have said, look all janky as hell.
7tqb; More than half of our front-end registers won't even power on, so I suppose we could certainly use something like that. I don't know what the heck this store was doing, but from the day I started working there, all the registers were already looking like they had been beaten with baseball bats. I know the equipment is old, but I've been to other Kmarts where the registers, while perhaps in slight states of disrepair, were not nearly so decayed. Some of the registers still being used are missing their entire front panels, exposing all the interior circuitry, or their monitors are barely hanging onto the articulated arms, with the plastic all cracked up, or any number of other severe damage plagues them.
They took out 2 register lanes from out store so customers will stop complaining about all the registers we have "available" with only one lane open. Now it looks better with fewer overall registers when you only have a couple open. What a joke.
Remodel = rearranging/eliminating counters/registers to free up space for quads and a deal flash center. There is essentially no upgrade in the stores quality.
Those getting remodels are probably to adjust for fewer units on counters.

It isn't odd when you think about it. Why do some folks remodel their homes? Because it helps bring up the value of their property when they want to sell it. Same thing applies here.
