I am considering joining MSFT. Can you tell me what it is like to work there? Should I just look elsewhere?

It really depends on your circumstances. The culture for the most part is very unpleasant. All off the bad, unbelievable stories you here, are for the most part, TRUE. Are you desperate and have no other offers? If that is the case, then yes, take it as a job you need, know that there are far better options out there - have you tried Google, FB, GILD, any other fast growing, high paying companies? Do explore other options and if you take it, know you will be in for about 2-5 years of utter pain. You will be paid well, there will be excitement and potential to work on some great projects. You will experience the worst politics of any company on the plant, you will meet some good but many many many very ugly people that will hurt your stomach and make you think you are in a bad movie.

Just avoid Office team. Unless you are Irish or Middle eastern, then your back is covered and you will be spared from layoff.
Do join. be happy and make your best. but do not count to be there for more than 5 years.
In general too, having Microsoft in your resume is not as attractive to other companies any more.

What group? What position?
In general, I would say do not worry about the news, the cuts are in specific groups and they are likely not ones extending offers nowadays
