Would like to confirm what I have heard from the grapevine, that a large percentage of layoffs are older workers.

Just being old is not enough to be worried. However, if you are at the higher end of your salary range and built up close to the max amount of PTO days (both of which take a long time to do meaning you are likely older) there is a fair chance you could be let go and either not replaced or replaced by a Temp for a lot less money. That's just smart, but sad, business. Been there 12 years and seen it many times.
I've witnessed them let go numerous older workers before i left. the worst was when they let go 2 wonderful older woman that worked their butts off.
