Thread regarding AFLAC Inc. layoffs

Aflac employees, wise up!!!

Aflac has always been sneaky and underhanded in the way they do business. Fortunately, they have Employee Appreciation Week and throw a few crumbs to over 4500+ employees to distract them from the MAJOR disservice being done to them. And unfortunately, the masses fall for the smoke and mirrors routine.

Aflac employees...wise up!!! EAW is a joke! You deserve more than a 1/2 day show and 1.5% average raise. Good companies...truly ones that are deserve a place on any "100 Best..." list value their employees, don't outsource jobs overseas in secret, and give fair raises for a job well done without pitting employees against each other in competition.

Welcome to 2022 where not much has changed. What people are not aware of is that there are so many IT, call center, and claims jobs that are outsourced and there is no control over them. IT has more than half of its developers working overseas. Capgemeni is a major company that has many call center positions. Deloitte has a good number of employees that work on site and online all around the world. If you thought it was bad then, just wait until Dan the man retires.

The funniest and craziest thing I have witnessed in recent EAW weeks is each Wednesday when employees are encouraged to come to work dressed in white to honor the founder John Amos! John Amos was a racists! He wore all white to portray himself as the great white southern plantation owner! Lol! Got slaves anyone? It's hilarious watching all the low paid black workers dress up like the master! What a bunch of ignorant, naive fools! He built the tower on a hill where plantation homes once resided so he would be looked up to by all of Columbus. Same with the house on the garage. What arrogance! And it continues to run in the family!

The big question is...WHY do employees feel valued by the trinkets thrown out during EAW?? Aflac touts profits in excess of $750 MILLION each quarter. If they value the employees, why don't give reasonable merit increases? Top performers only get 2.5 - 3% (unless of course you are one of the favored "chosen ones" - maybe 1 person per division - that gets a hefty 5-6%). Employees should wise up - EAW is a distraction. Look at the remainder of the year. EAW "winnings" - a chair, movie tickets, gas card, even a "grand prize" of a few hundred dollars - are gone in a matter of minutes. A merit increase has a lasting impact on your career and the welfare of your family. So again, Aflac doesn't really value its. Call center and claims employees are forced to work log hours and forced overtime- with no regard for their health, well-being, or loss of family time. Aflac only gets away with treating people so poorly because the employees fail to hold the company accountable.

Just wait until the "Big Plan" is shown. Call Center will be outsourced soon. Cost cutting measures will take this company and ruin a lot of people's lives.

Aflac carefully orchestrates the timing of their layoffs and it's done in an almost cruel manner:

  1. They have "Employee Appreciate Week" (EAW) which is a 5-day event. Each day, prize numbers are drawn for gifts/cash, employees are given a signature "EAW gift" (suitcase with duck logo, fancy soccer chair, jackets, etc), snacks are given out daily, managers coordinate team-building events/games, each day has a costume theme. By the end of this fun week, you've bonded even more with your team, manager and feel appreciated, valued.

  2. This week concludes with a big event at a convention center where employees win big prizes, professional comedian/host leads games/skits, leaders talk about how much they love you.

  3. The next week, employees receive a survey for Fortune Magazine's "best places to work" rating- what a coincidence! Aflac uses this "top employer" rating to drive good PR, recruit great employees - and they desperately need this good rating.

  4. Within weeks of EAW, in 2016 Aflac eliminated more than 100 jobs in Columbia, SC - 10% of the local workforce. Didn't matter if you received a stellar performance review - there was no warning. You go into work, get called into the boss's office where an HR rep sits - hands you a severance package and escorts you to your desk where you are to gather your things and leave immediately. You must turn in your company-issued cell phone, computer, badge immediately.

  5. Fellow team members who you bonded with just weeks before or worked with for years, came in to find your desk cleared out and were told not to ask questions.

There are no ducks that can bring humor to this situation. It is cruel in the way it's managed, timed and orchestrated. It is a bottom-line company, just like all the rest whose top concern is $$ - not their people. PS: Don't be fooled by the "Top 100 Best Places to Work" - it's a joke.
