Thread regarding DeVry Inc. layoffs

The people originally helping them just disappeared

During a layoff it was pretty cold. My friend said they have had warmer interactions with a person taking the order in a drive thru McDonalds. For online they either bring you into a room with the manager and HR or call you 3way with HR and the manager and basically say that due to the continuing financial challenges and all this they are eliminating x amount of positions (if you are lucky) in your dept and you happen to be one of them. Then HR goes on about their script about how the severance process and "separation" will work. Manager wraps it up with the fake "thank you for your service." That's pretty much it.

They say they will have all these services to help you and all this. Don't buy into it. It's a load of bs. You lose access to your systems within minutes of being notified. I know I had colleagues and students reaching out or assistance because they tell no one who was let go. The people originally helping them just disappeared. So things fall through the cracks. Managers can't be bothered with that though. Too busy spending all day in meetings being useless.

I was one who was laid off. I just wanted to get it over with instead of dragging it out with courts and all of that. You may have the money and time to waste on it, but not all of us have that luxury. It just wasn't worth that to me. I would rather spend my time finding a job that I will like and that appreciates their employees.

Companies find a way around that all the time or no company would lay off people ever. Besides if you haven't been reading posts in different threads people are just happy to sign and be done with the place. The people I have known got severance and unemployment and were out of work for a few months. Was it hard, somewhat. It would have been harder to not sign the paperwork, not get severance and try to pay legal fees. No one I know regretted just signing and being done. But to each their own.

Yes, they are probably very happy to be rid of the psychological stress...I'm sure it's a nice peaceful feeling until the lack of salary and benefits starts to take hold, and they can't find another job because of the awful reputation of the place they worked at for years or decades. Probably not happy at all then. Yes, companies have the right to layoff employees at will in most states. Employees also have the right to sue for employment discrimination if they belong to a protected category and are laid off.

I have the feeling those being let go are happy to go and to get out of this place.

How could you threaten to sue? Companies have a right to lay people off. And Illinois is an at will state

Anyone push back and ask for more severance, or threaten to sue, etc?

When I got laid off, I received a warm call from hr. The center dean was there to be a witness. They gave me an end date and yet, expected me to be there until my last day. I asked who else got laid off, there were 36 of us, and hr wouldn't say. It wasn't the friendly call from hr praising me for years of service and loyalty to DeVry. I couldn't sign my severance paperwork fast enough!!!

I think they were just talking about when someone gets laid off not about a Lay off in progress.
