Homeowners in Sidney whose primary income comes from Cabela's- what is your plan if you lose your job and income? Is anyone taking steps now to prepare for this possibility?

if you look at all of cheyenne county there are 123 properties for sale
Yes that is Mr. Milners residence for sale on Krueger's lake.
is that Tommy's house that's listed for $1.5 million?
Speaking of homes, the property taxes in Sidney have currently increased....
I can picture hundreds of people being able to afford the house for sale on Zillow for $1,500,000. Do you think that house will be foreclosed on? Management destroyed this town with their incompetence. I feel sorry for the people dealing with foreclosure.
More numbers:
I checked the Zillow real estate site and it currently lists 110 homes for sale in Sidney and 4 currently in foreclosure. This is not good for a town this size. Towns of similar size and population list between 30 and 40 houses for sale at any one time.
I wish we could keep on topic and exclude the poor harassed person who trolls around the threads replying incoherently to almost every comment.
This site is for an open exchange of ideas, opinions, and yes, even rumors.
If your feelings get hurt by a post you disagree with, too bad. This is the United States where the constitution permits free speech.
Anyway, back on topic. I worked for the company for several years and loved it. Then, I saw corporate greed take over and start dismantling a once great place to work.
Some of the finest people I ever met were at Cabela's and many are still dear friends.
Yes, I am glad I got out when I did, but I still fell terrible for what is happening to those who are still there, especially those in Sidney, a town that grew up around Cabela's and is now being torn apart by it.
I've never been to Sidney, and never intend to go there. So for all of us that have been screwed by the arrogant boat licking folks that showed up on the jet and acted like they were gods gift to the company, we don't care what happens to Sidney.
100 percent disagree. True it isn't just about Sidney true
. However Sidney is without a doubt the community which will be the most affected and the community without a doubt which has the longest history with the company. Sidney has devoted my fall more time over the years by the citizens in the community and the employees at the company. Once again I wonder if another poster is phasing himself for his comment. Although this is one company and each employee at Cabela's does deserve to be recognized in the merger agreement.
@@NU4bXdn-4kex Great explanation what a good job putting it into a proper perspective. It is NOT just about Sidney but about all the employees of Cableas as a whole will be impacted by this nonsense not to mention the communities they live in and the multitude of small business that will be directly impacted by this course of action taken by the (leaders) of this ONCE great company.
I agree what is happening in Sidney is both sad and tragic, but Sidney is a mere blip on the radar of Cabela's employees.
I don't mean to minimize what is going on in Sidney, but I think we all need to look at the bigger picture.
Using several sources, and the numbers are an approximation, Cabela's employs approximately 19,100 people over the entire company. Approximately 2000 are employed in Sidney in various positions with the company.
The effect the merger with Bass Pro is having on Sidney is devastating, but that leaves another 17,100 employees this will hit throughout the entire Cabela's system.
10.5% of all Cabela's employees are employed in Sidney with 89.5% employed elsewhere.
However, the population of Sidney is approximately 6,900. Almost 30% of the population will be directly effected not to speak of the other businesses that will take a huge hit. Tax revenues will go out the window and there goes the governmental services and the schools.
If Cabela's closes down the Sidney operation it will most likely destroy the town.
Outside of Sidney, numerous towns, housing markets and people will be adversely effected, because all of these big stores and DC's created a sub economy is these areas.
if Sidney was in a housing bloom with a shortage of houses and no houses were selling due to the shortage and the housing market was experiencing a tremendous price increase in value. Somehow I I am sure there would be enough data to increase the valuation of homes.
The County Assessor's Office only sends out 2017 valuation notices if your valuation has changed from last year. For most homeowners their valuations won't change (and they won't receive notice of it not changing) due to a lack of comp sales (houses not selling in the stagnant market). You can protest your 2017 valuation but it has to be done before June 30th. I protested mine - I encourage everyone to join me because if the Assessor's Office doesn't lower valuations just maybe the State will come in and order a revaluation based on the current market conditions.
Given the fact there are so many houses for sale or rent in our community, and if, and I mean if, there is a significant reduction of personnel. I do believe that for many bankruptcy or foreclosure may be the only option available
I do hope I am wrong, yet the immediate and near future does not look good here in our community.
foreclosure or bankruptcy should be the last choice. You may have these two choices removed on your credit report after seven years however they will remain on your credit history for ever.
I posted several things which I thought the country, the city of Sidney, the state of Nebraska could do and either bass pro or Cabela's could do to ease the situation. WHAT I PROPOSED FOR THE CITY OF SIDNEY IS PERHAPS THEY COULD PROPOSE A BUDGET WHICH CUT THE BUDGET AND REDUCE TAXES AND TO HAVE A OPEN MEETINGS POLICY WITH THE PUBIC WHICH I BELIEVE EVERY COMMUNITY IN THE STATE OF NEBRASKA HAS EXCEPT SIDNEY HAS. I am curious are these two outrageous request to the poster given the fact the city of Sidney has probably in almost every major newspaper in the nation and the potential hardships that could occur.
I think they mean walk away from their house and let it go into foreclosure. Then take a job elsewhere and rent until they can buy again when the foreclosure is cleared in 7 years.
if close to 2000 people lose their jobs, who are you going to rent to? Where will they get the money to pay the rent to you?
to the poster saying there there are many things that can be done on the city level- is your plan to just wait and see if that happens? And if it doesn't, figure it out at that time?
My plan:
Badda Book, Badda Boom!
Let it sink in.
Badda Book, Badda Boom!
It will work.
Badda Book, Badda Boom!
Walk away and rent for 7 years if it came down to it.
I believe the six directors have a three year severance package in the agreement . Has anyone else heard what kind of severance package is to be paid to the rest of the Cabela's employees. I would hope length of service and employee record would be a factor.
there are many things which could be done on a city level , a state level and a company level with either Cabela's or bass pro. I however am sure the poster if I mentioned any of them would get extremely angrily and say this would never get done. The company could pay a severance package which would resemble the severance package paid in previous years. the city and county could for once propose a budget which would cut cost and taxes. The state could offer training to laid off worker and unemployment compensation. THE CITY COUNCIL COULD HAVE THE RESPECT TO THE VOTERS OF THIS TOWN IN A DIFFERCULT SITUATION AND ALLOW DISCUSSION AT COUNCIL MEETINGS BETWEEN THE PUBIC AND THE COUNCIL. THIS IS THE PRATICE I BELIEVE IN EVERY CITY IN NEBRASKA EXCEPT SIDNEY.
The plan is to deal with it. It is what it is.
Is this for research ?
