Thread regarding DeVry Inc. layoffs

I sold off my DV stock long ago when I realized that all of their hope for future growth was based on flawed logic and false premises

. I now know the reason why the upper execs believe that there is hope. First, their underlings don't tell them the whole truth because such negativity (a.k.a. honesty) is punished, at least in my region. Second, they make loose and inaccurate correlations between the data they receive and the initiatives they believe are responsible.

This is why you can never trust the town hall presentations. A little critical thinking shoots holes all through them.

Start a task force to identify the top 2 or 3 issues seen at the college sites---then focus on fixing these without distraction. Thereafter identify the next 3 issues. This is the only way to make any progress in turning things around. You can't fix 10 years of neglect & system-wide problems in 2 weeks, why not fix things rather than let the ship upend & sink?

Disdain for students has been part of DVU's management culture for a long time. A buddy of mine, who is a great professor that really cares for his students, tells a story that really got under his skin. He says he was on a conference call a couple years ago with national deans talking about the new software development degree and he asked why we call it software development instead of software engineering which is more mainstream and common. They told him it was the same reason why we have CIS instead of computer science - our students can't handle the rigor of a real science or engineering degree. It bothered him because it was so insulting to those students who are capable of doing so much more than DV gives them. It bothers me for a different reason. It's practically admitting that they target students who have little chance of success. Disgusting.

I used to work in dv financial aid dept and boy do i feel slimy. In the dept, most people are fresh graduates who don't know any better. Combined with nontransferrable skills, rampant favoritism, and inequal work loads, people are stuck and bitter, giving birth to callousness and indifference towards the students plight. Do you know that your personal information as students sometimes are handled by temp worker? A lot of my colleagues started as temps and some temps got access into the system that has your info and afterwards got fired.

It's also funny when you think about their withdrawal policy. If education is their product, withdrawal policy is their refund policy. Now imagine you buy some sh--ty product and only have one week to get full refund. Sometimes, if the class does not even meet every day, that essentially mean you only have few days to decide whether you like the product or not. Yuck, thank God i'm out

DeVry is based on fraud, greed, and deliberate manipulation by management. The managers are liars and thieves who care only about making themselves rich while cheating everyone else - students, employees, and shareholders.
