Of course "Ad Talem" which is supposed to mean "towards empowerment" actually doesn't. A more literal translation is "almost good"

Terrible name. Is this instead of DEG? What about a college being called a University? Really? No reference at all to the history or any positive legacy from the past? Trying erase the memory of the dead bodies of former students, employees, and soon to be dismissed colleagues. Bye bye DeVry. It has come to this. Very sad. 😧

  1. DeVry had a respectable reputation - umteen years ago. Then the MBA boys decided they could squeeze a quick profit out of it and bail ship. They did that through several administrations, until our reputation was shot.

  2. Adtalem is hard to pronounce, means nothing to common people, has no reputation, seems like just a way to get away from a rotten reputation. Adtalem is a cop-out.

  3. I would turn DeVry around, as DeVry: Start turning out quality graduates, and stick it out for the long run. This would benefit everyone: current students, former students, stockholders, career faculty and administration.

By changing their name they are trying to distance themselves from any wrong doing (if there is any where they were caught or is being investigated) or just trying to find a buyer that sees dollar signs without digging too far into the organizations past. The unfortunate piece of this process is that the management (mostly) will stay intact while they re-structure the lower levels (the non-management workers).

The issue lies in that it is the management layers that do not change enough and keep things more of the same in terms of attitude, the way they conduct themselves (such as looking the other way when fellow managers/directors collect double paychecks or take time off without reporting it), and the way policy is easily disregarded in order to benefit each other.

This all has a lasting impact not just on the employees at the organization however, it spills over into the schools themselves in one form or another.

It is a shame that DeVry (a name that really meant something on a resume at one time) has been 'lumped' with the likes of Corinthian Colleges and ITT Tech. The victims of this are the students and the employees who worked ethically and morally to give the students the education they promised to give while management may have looked the other way or was to naïve to see and question others actions that did not conform to written behavior policy.

Shame on all management regardless of industry for thinking that no one is watching or that the behavior is 'too small' for anyone to care about.

The communications from the organization have been somewhat clear of late about a smaller, "leaner" DeVry University. They've been cutting programs and classes, and have ambitious goals to reduce course offerings further this summer. Surely there will be more layoffs ahead as they continue to shrink. But with how much money they are still fueling into ads and improvements, it doesn't appear like they are calling it quits yet. Good things ahead? Doesn't look that way. But DeVry D-Day, or DD-Day is not yet upon us this year. Adtalem...lol

I agree. I think they will try to sell DVU. It is hard to imagine a buyer though. Maybe it will be another $1 deal like Kaplan.

I'm on the train of thought that devry will be sold off

As soon as the rebranding was announced, one of the former deans said DVU will shut down soon after. We could be sold, but who would buy us? We have nothing of value. Shutdown seems more likely than sale, but so few things actually make sense anymore.

All of this points in the direction of "Adtalem" selling DVU. Don't see it lasting more than year. Stay tuned...

I think the name describes our only successful method of getting new students.

"Adtalem" = "Ads, then tail 'em."
