Thread regarding Cabela's Inc. layoffs

Is better to die a slow death or ... just tear off the Band Aid?

Some have suggested a gradual closing of Cabelas headquarters over the course of years would be ideal. A substantial presence in Sidney...for some time...is what people are hoping for. Is this good for Sidney or will it just prolong the state of limbo. I can't really believe BP has any real plans of keeping Sidney as a a base of operations. Wouldn't it be better for the whole community to just tear of the Band Aid...get a new employer in corporate building (perhaps an Ag or logistic business). I know it will take some time to get a tennant, but at least it will begin to rebuild the community. It would force people to move on with their lives.

Sound like you and your wife may like living in the country. You will have few neighbors and few businesses if Cabela's or bass pro doesn't keep a large present in Sidney Nebraska. you will need warren buffet like money however to pay your taxes in Sidney Nebraska if Cabela's or bass pro doesn't keep a large present in Sidney.

Enough of this bs. You can post from your text books which has basically no bearing on this situation. As far as life in Sidney Nebraska as we know depends 99.999 percent on what goes on with the business on the hill. If the deal goes thru and bass pro keeps a present in Sidney at the distribution center, the retail store and corporate which is close to the current level of business and employees in the Sidney area Sidney Nebraska will have to cut back but the future looks fairly bright . Of if the deal doesn't go thru Sidney Nebraska will be fine if Cabela's keep a level of employees and business relatively to the same level as today. This is a fact I have heard two high level city employees) and two high level businessmen in the Sidney area which stated basically( and I am total agreement) Sidney Nebraska will not even be as good as east Kimball if Cabela's ( or bass pro) doesn't keep a large present in Sidney Nebraska. If Cabela's or (bass pro) should leave Sidney Nebraska this town as we know it today will be destroyed and the Sidney Nebraska as we know it today will be no longer. Probably close to 50 percent of the homes will be for sale. Most restaurants will be closed. the down town area will have so many empty store fronts. I do not know what will happened with the tax situation the citizen of Sidney have a hard time now paying for the expenses for the golf course new high school. new police cars, streets improvement sewer and roads for the new editions at a housing district( which has not sold one house in four years}. NO SIDNEY NEBRASKA WILL NOT BE FINE IF CABELAS OR BASS PRO DOES NOT KEEP A LARGE PRESENT IN SIDNEY. SIDNEY NEBRASKA WILL BASICALLY PERHAP BECOMES THE BIGGEST GHOST TOWN IN AMERICAN.

Sidney will be more than fine - always has survived - look at the history - the cleansing of Cabela's as a driving force will be painful yet open new doors for those moving on and new business will move in and assist with opportunities. It is the natural progression of life and companies. My wife and I really feel for those that have and will be dramatically hit in so many ways by the incompetence of Tommy and his band of incompetence ridden leaders - the key is to look at this as a learning experience and enjoy each. Better things will come for all of us.

I look at the statement from the economic developer of Sidney ne which states Sidney Nebraska will be just fine after Cabela's and the city is on the right side of the Cabela issue. I see good things for the employees and the city of Sidney if the sale goes thru .

Tanking - the spiral continues, valuation will decrease prior to sale, with Ganders going out of business sale, sales at all levels will further decline - predictable death of an incredible brand. The leadership team thought they were invincible- wrong Tommy, bad decisions and extremely poor management combined with non-customer centric leadership has eroded the ship to a sale and end of an iconic brand. What is happening to Gander is a preview of how this will go down. Had Tommy had the foresight to step aside and bring in a proven team, even at the last hour, may have been able to at least keep this ship floating - textbook example of poor leadership, very poor leadership selections, and basic greed. It is over. As a fellow employee and passionate user, I hope we can all move beyond this and allow this experience to assist us in how not to lead and inspire. This whole mess really deserves a Harvard business case analysis - unfortunately Tommys side of the story is going to be very, very dark and bleak - rightfully so. May your terrible leadership be a beacon for future leaders on how not to lead an iconic brand and company.

I'm thinking the 17% down has to do with Q1 earnings, not stock price.

CAB ran down -17% in Q1 based on today's news. The company is bleeding. Why would BP hang onto anything in Sidney right now. They need to right this ship as soon as the buyout is done.

From my experience when I'm in talks with executives they are told what they are to say. People jumping ship in mass is not good for them. You may have a different relationship then I did, but I felt like my relationship was pretty darn good.

I am basing my post in regard to the future of Cabela's corporate on detail talks with executive from Cabalas , negotiation with bass pro personnel, and the news in general. Wow did I hit a nerve with the poster . He seemed almost angry if someone imply bass pro isn't going to close corporate with the sale is finalized. WHAT ARE YOU BASING YOU CONTINUE FORECAST FOR CABELAS ON. WHAT IS TITLE OR POSITION ANYWAY

I can't believe my eyes when I read:

I believe short term corporate will stay. Long term changes will be made and I doubt no one really knows the answer at this point . I will admit long term as things now stand it looks like several positions will be cut at the Sidney corporate offices.

What are you basing this on????

Is this what you would like to happen or is this what you believe would happen?

"Several employees will lose there job"...that's like say the Titanic was involved in a boating accident!

before you attack me for miss spelling tommy millner name. I didn't say I sat in the room with Mr. MIllner . I stated I sat in the room with several Cabela's top executives . Mr. millner wasn't in the meeting.

To the guy that sat in the room for 3 hours with Tommy for the Q&A, it's Milber. Tommy Millner. I question the authenticity of your post if you don't even know his name.

Do you really believe if the merger goes through Corp will stay? I wouldn't bet on it

First of all, I would not believe Tommy as he has been anything but honest and second of all, he is the leader that sold out due to poor decisions and management. If you believe differently you probably believe Hillary is honest - it is basic business, pure and simple. Tommy and his cronies want to get out of town safely and have everything riding on keeping the ship riding above water until this is done. I do know Tommy and as such, do not trust him. I also know Johnny - he is very shrewd and business savvy and has a huge burden on his shoulders. My question - why keep the team leaders that failed? Pleas answer since you seem to know the truth

I sat in a room for almost three hours discussing this merger with Cabela's top executives in a question and answer segment .. There has been some talk of duplication of services were to be eliminated is the only thing brought up which resemble your comments at all. I am curious you are talking for Johnny Morris and Tommy Milder do you know them pretty well an on a first name bases . Am I right to assume your source is the in depth meetings you have had with tommy milder and Johnny Morris do you have any other source for your information . My advice to when you talk to your friend Johnny Morris you need to tell him that with you running the show Cabela's can be gone within in months. Because without you running the show I have been told it is going to be a very differ cult merger a range of two years or more to complete.

The reality is that Bass Pro bought its biggest competitor to enable efficiency and purchasing power - Sidney's demise or ability is not even a question, especially when you consider the extreme reality of a 500 million dollar loan -Johnny is not going to be advised to be nice and help Sidney, he is expected to produce and prosper from the get go, period. This is strictly business and serious business. There is no reason to keep Sidney as an office and have dual functions, dual costs and a loss of critical communication not to mention a completely different way of doing business and business culture. This was not a partnership - the leadership of Cabelas screwed up and lost the company, BP is the new owner. Get over it and move on. Take your frustrations out on Tommy and our illustrious management team. They ran the ship into the ground and Cabelas is months away from being gone, period.

these silly insults are getting old. I am stating facts. the facts I would predict almost every town in the united of American would be more then happy to take a bass pro or Cabela's off of Sidney's hands. I was asking the poster am I right h e would favor the town of Sidney to tell Cabela's or bass pro get out of town we don't want you. We could call Scottsbluff Denver Omaha and I am sure every town in American and ask them if they would take Cabela's or bass pro off our hands. Seem like I really hit a nerve with you the hater of Cabela's and Sidney. By the way it is also old you can tell the same post in the last hour are from the same chatter.

I can not believe the post sometimes on this site. As I read the post it sounds like the poster wants the city of Sidney to tell Cabela's or bass pro. " get out of Sidney Nebraska now we don't want you in our town" . The comment is unbelievable . I am almost sure that if this huge make believe corporation of the poster wants to locate in Sidney Nebraska today in the new 40 million dollars Cabela's corporation. The make believe corporation would get located in the new corporate building quickly. No I do not believe it is better to tell Cabela or bass pro to get out of town we don't want you. I instead think we as residence of Sidney Nebraska and the state of Nebraska should do everything POSSIBLE TO KEEP CABELAS IN SIDNEY AND IN STATE OF NEBRASKA,
