I know of several managers who's employment was "terminated" for various reasons. Most for things such as "poor performance", despite having glowing performance reviews given then barely a month prior, or anonymous complaints registered by other managers or employees, following which the manager was informed they were "under investigation" but not told what for and from which the results could not be contested.
This allowed CSX to eliminate positions by transferring others to the "terminated" employees position, then leaving the transferred employees position unfilled. Additionally, CSX has the benefit of now not having to offer any sort of severance or separation benefits to these terminated employees.
