Thread regarding DeVry Inc. layoffs

I fully intend on getting the heck out ASAP, but...

Here's how I feel about this company I work for, please forgive me/explain why I might be wrong about this. The for profit university exists to make money for its shareholders. Shareholders do not buy stock unless they see they will make some sort of future profit. Devry is owned mostly by mutual funds (people's 401k investments) and could possibly be because of the diversification of funds, some people still like the for profits because SOME have shown to be somewhat stable in the past few years.

The reason why DeVry is so Stable is because while DeVry U course takers are down, Chamberlain has filled the gap. Not sure what is going to happen now that Chamberlain will be its own university now, I feel like it was a stupid idea but they had to get away from the regulatory nightmare that has become Devry.

Lisa Wardell is a person who takes companies and makes them profitable. In the interim, this has meant laying off Ross Vet & Med staff, Devry online staff, and other non essential staff to 'rightsize' and put the numbers back above 0. The next step in this is if Devry, Ross, AUC, OR Chamberlain is not profitable, the school could be sold. As of right now, Devry is not profitable, and the actions taken by Paul are questionable to work, but we shall see. Keller, I mean , hangs on the coat tails of Devry. They only have 7k students and have year over year, been down so who knows.

I fully intend on getting the heck out ASAP. It's depressing to work for a company that lays peopel off in small groups to stay under the radar of the media and their own employees. I wonder what else lil Lisa has up her sleeve. This bag is hers to bust, that's for darn sure.

As an X-employee of DeVry University, I would say the company is getting exactly what they had coming to them. This company has continuously promoted people into positions whom are friends of friends and is ran by individuals with little experience in the field.

The Career Services department was literally ran down by 2 unethical ladies who now find themselves unemployed. God don't like ugly DeVry University...expect more fury!!

@MvyKgCw-4ygl, I said the same thing years ago, when we actually offered a decent product but still, for some reason, had misleading and inaccurate advertising. I said we'd be better off if we just told people what our classroom experience was really like. But as Home Office increased their mandates to a stranglehold on our academic freedom, the quality of that experience dropped sharply. The only kind of advertising DVU can get away with now is the empty, meaningless campaign we're running now. We can't lie outright anymore after our troubles with the FTC and ED, and telling the truth would just sink us even faster. That's why our current ad campaign says pretty much nothing of substance. It's just enough of a teaser to lure people in so the Dept of Enrollment Management (aka Admissions) can get their hooks in them.

Why don't the campuses just concentrate on delivering great learning experiences? Forget about the marketing hype trying to draw people in, just let the education work. Whoever wants to apply can, but we do not need to "convince" anyone. Just get rid of the pushy-marketing & let the school do its thing.

For those looking to better understand the problems with the for-profit sector, I cannot recommend this article enough.

How For-Profit Colleges Sell 'Risky Education' http://www.scpr.org/programs/fresh-air/2017/03/27/34606/

It is a long listen but Tressie McMillan has been there, in admissions, and has a lot to share.

Maybe Lisa Wardell went to Devry?

But why go there in the first place? Devry is woefully overpriced, the classes mediocre, and their degrees aren't taken that seriously anymore. And being an online "school" is nothing special now.

The courses are actually transferable as devry is hlc accredited and semester based. So things like English, math, and some gen eds will transfer to other regionally accredited schools

My question is -- what are the students told to make them enroll? The credits aren't transferable & it's expensive.

If you don't want to spend time in a classroom there are so many online state schools. The tech classes can be done at the vocational schools.

What exactly did you say to convince people to sign up. Real Question

I can't understand why students don't go to their local community college. Either in person or online. It amazes me that for profit schools exist. Or existed.

Everything that devry has in my region, the community colleges and the extended programs of the vocational schools cover at a fraction of the cost.

There are remedial classes to get the students going too.

DeVry managers are liars, cheats, and frauds. They are going to enrich themselves and then crash what remains of the schools. The only students left are those too stupid to figure out that they are being robbed blind. All of the managers are 100% incompetent fools who lack basic decency as human beings.
