For my own safety I won't say too much...Just know that there is a 20 step plan that was created roughly 6 years ago. A plan that will insure that the highest level corporate employees will be the ones with the life raft. This Titanic of a shipwreck has just struck the iceberg that it was on a clear path towards. I won't comment further. Just know that out of the 20 step plan we are one step number 8.

So how did this turn out there Nostradamus?
Any update from poster?
2019 and this thread and comment remain b---s--- LMAO, all these disgruntled sh--bag ex employees that s--- at life are on here crying about losing their job and making false rumors. You unemployed broke sh--bags. Go f--- yourself. 😂
I'd actually be interested in the differences in union contracts throughout the various regions. Now it gets complicated when talking about different classifications, but here in northeast Ohio, all new hires for the front end, grocery, produce, frozen and dairy are classified as utility clerks. According to the current union contract, they cannot be scheduled more than 30 hours a week and receive no benefits. You can only receive benefits if you work more than 30 hours a week. Also, the pay rate is capped at $10.20. Now, I'd say if you were with the company for at least 15 years, have become a leader, or been lucky enough to become full time and had your classification changed, you might be alright. But everyone else is screwed, so I don't think the union is affecting the bottom line all that much. Negotiations on a new contract are about to begin very soon that should prove to be very interesting.
Just goes to show how foolish and out of touch with reality management and leaders are to issue 20 billion in sales by 2020. Heck, they had barely cracked 10 billion when issuing 2020. They must think the commoners are pretty stupid.
Pretty sure closing the UNION STORES doesn't mean closing hundreds seeing as though there's not near that many union stores. And 4 years is a long time ago so sales being high then has nothing to do with now because now the company is sinking
Lol you think they would close hundreds of stores for 30 days. It's hilarious how some of you think ge problems are the unions fault. Just 4 years ago the company issued a challenge of 20 billion by 2020 sales were so high.
Not sure what gets taken out for dues but having been in both union and non union stores (never a member of the union myself) seems like union employees clean up compared to non union especially the second they get "taken advantage of" and have to work overtime or a sunday or a holiday
GE loves the union, helps keep wages so low. I think it's pretty pathetic that for most employees, the max pay rate at Giant Eagle is equal to the starting pay rate of Walmart and Target.
Um, YES they CAN boot the union out! Maybe you should get your sh-- right before making idiotic comments on here! Any Union Retailer can easily close their doors for 30 days and reopen Non-Union without any notice or legal objection from the blood-s---ing Unions!
Giant Eagle is OVER PRICED. You walk into Giant Eagle Columbus stores and it's like a cemetery.
Thankfully they can't just boot out the union. Almost all the store team members are part time now so that wouldn't help anyway.
And you're an idiot who clearly can't read. I said they need to lower prices AND boot out the union. Not boot out the union in order to lower prices
You're a idiot if you think that would lower prices.
Yeah if GE wants to be more profitable they need to lower prices and boot out the unions
All kinds of cuts just happened. Dieticians, eagles nest, the main kitchen behind the south hills store, all has happened in less then 2 months. Regionals and specialists ate visting stores daily scrambling and playing the blame game.. Bottom line is that sales are down for 4 quarters in a row. This company will never be what it used to be, there are to many dept s and positions that drive the price of food up in these stores.
What is amazing is how they make money in spite of themselves.
As long as they can clear 80 million, and they will always find a way, they will survive and there will be good jobs for 10's of thousands of team members. Support and shop at your local Giant Eagle and help the great people that work there!
Speaking of gourmet prices, I was speaking with an employee at the MD I frequent and he told me that practically all of the hot bar/buffet food they offer is no longer made in store. He said for a while they were getting it from a central kitchen or something, but now most of it is precooked and comes in frozen. He said most of the chefs and cooks have quit because they came to market district to be a chef and now all they do is push papers. Can anyone in the know confirm if this is at all accurate?
I work as a vendor at a GE that place is never really busy. It's located in a central location with a Kroger MP right across the street. The Kroger is always overflowing with business while GE just sits there basically empty. Why? Because GE is CRAZY expensive! They offer average food at gourmet prices!
No clue and total BS.... And what impetus did you provide? Please enlighten everyone. Thanks.
So everything's peachy huh. Nothing to see here. No matter how you look at it this place is in terrible shape and in desperate need of a lifeline.
You have no clue about cleaning up the financials. This is total B.S.
Rumor has it Kroger was in as buyer, but pulled out of the deal. Cross-training to cut costs, not replacing those who leave... all indicators of a company that is cleaning up their financials on paper. You do that when your business is failing. Your numbers have to look good to potential investors/buyers... and they are scrambling to make it happen.
Are we still on Step 8?
Losing money, who's kidding who. If they can get you to believe this they are winning. When the say they are losing money it is only on paper. If it was true they were losing money, it would only be the people in charge fault, making bad decisions. Stop letting them point the finger at you. They are still lining their pockets now and in the future.

They were within hours of being sold until the buyer really came to their senses and actually saw what they would be getting.

The cross training is due to cuts in labor, and they are scrambling to staff people in other departments.
They will scratch and claw, go down with the sinking ship, whatever you want to call it, but they will never sell. Too much pride. I did find it funny as I was in line at customer service in a store yesterday, I saw a sheet posted by a time clock that said sign up for cross-department training. I didn't read the whole thing but it said something like cross-training means you'll be working in the deli, meat, bakery departments, cashier, etc. So I guess this is their way of getting people to work for a lower pay rate.
Watching inventory and business decrease, shrinkage increase, people leave, not replaced. MD built a mile away here as well as store that just closed
Like a rug
Not a chance. They are always promoting Respect.
But they keep telling those left they are not selling to Kroger. They would not lie would they?
Shoring up for a sell-off of most of their stores. Kroger is only one possibility as buyer. Keep the few MD stores, convert a few others. Increasing competition from places like Aldi is driving them out. GE is now a dinosaur in the landscape of supermarkets.
With the recent cuts and "trimming of the fat" I'm still betting on the rumored Kroger acquisition
Only Market District stores will survive, long-term.

They start cutting pay at store level and they're really gonna wanna have LP on guard at the corporate office. Some of the salaried mgr's I know are already halfway crazy
Wow it's amazing how many jobs been lost & many more on the way talk to any driver or warehouse worker lots of worries at all levels of seniority
I don't buy the 7 year plan. They can't even execute any part of their reoccurring three year plan every year let alone a single continuous 7 year plan.
Pay cuts yes. That is most certainty a part of their so called renewed 2020, Part Two.
April 18th...I know this board is great for posting rumors and speculation, but making predictions about things to happen seven years from now is just a bit too far fetched. It'd be more accurate to say that in 7 years 70% of the current employees will no longer work there...but of course that has nothing to do with the place closing down. Anyway, the latest rumor I've heard is that there's going to be pay cut in stores for all salaried and other non-union employees.
