Thread regarding Dell Inc. layoffs

Is it better to be laid off or to know you are being pushed out? Go with your gut.

Thanks for letting me vent.

( I'll be appropriate.)

Please do comment if you had a similar experience. Others will benefit by acknowledging the problem and seeing a path for better days.

I was let go a while back and yes I was angry with the way I was treated for quite a while before my exit was requested.

To be blunt- No one cared.

After more than a decade of success and strong relationships, No one cared...

The hardest part was definitely the internal business climate in months before my exit.

Most of us are very experienced, yes, we are over 45. Race and gender are mixed pretty evenly according to our company's demographic.

The first signs of "the end" were pretty obvious, not being included in meetings set up by team leaders, folks not showing up or last minute or sending cancellations for no reason for meetings that I set up, I was not being included in internal dinners or outings etc.

Then came pressure on my compensation- missed bonuses (because they were honestly not attainable).

Even more difficult yet- the personal and professional disrespect, comments about being the old guard, comparing me and others my age to Dad, Uncle, Grandpa ( of course these folks were joking....right?).

The WORST- was being accused of not doing my job, even though I'd fought like heck to stay busy, relevant, showed leadership, and went the extra mile.

I wasn't going to post here. I've moved on. My stress is getting better, it was awful for a while. My family really struggled with me.

The reason for this long post is because I want to tell anyone who is saying that guys like me who are still employed or who may have being let go are irrelevant, lazy, old. You are wrong. And you are missing the chance to work and learn alongside some of the best professionals that you'll ever meet.

You are also showing anyone who may be reading this forum ,blog, who may be feeling anxious about their job or recent layoff, that they are better off to move on.

They are right- their gut was/is telling them the truth. Discrimination was/ is happening and it is or was wrong. Whether intentional or not.

It gives me peace to believe that I don't think that true leadership knows this behavior is happening. I honestly believe theyd shut it down if they did. I also don't think the problem is just with management. It's at the team level too and it's really bad.

There's a people problem- akin to bullying that must be fixed. The bullies are winning the rest are stressed or have already been shown the door.

Please do your best to hang in there. Things really do get better and there's a world of opportunity waiting for your skills.

I'm a customer now. Customers are people. People will always buy products from a brand they trust. I'm still working on that part.

So, did you all decide to keep your DVMT shares?

Culture clashes will always happen. A lot of people probably don't remember when Compaq bought Digital Equipment Corporation and then when HP bought Compaq. There were some famous stories of what went down during those heady days in the IT industry!

It seems that age based discrimination is one form of discrimination that is still practiced at Dell EMC.

EMC'ers will never accept Dell, it's just cultural conflict. The best have already left, remaining unskilled are just hanging around.

Dell engineering working on EMC storage and taking credit is a joke. Why VP's and higher are not able to see what is going on is mystery

Upvoting Amazing -What a mess

Glad to hear confirmation from an outside source. It's all smoke and mirrors on the inside.

Dell is rapidly moving into the rearview mirror for the smartest EMC folks... who will never truly be Dell "team members" (read: hapless peons/minions being thrown a bone of simulated equality). They're not going to wait for RR to decide their fate. There's really no need to.

Massive distortions of reality on the "acquiring" side, failing to see that hemorraghing money is an unsustainable pattern. You can pretend it's not, and keep rowing your leaky boat without patching the leaks... but that doesn't make it so. If you don't get in the habit of patching - or at least bailing, you're just gonna sink.

And no quality EMC person needs to go down with them. Full stop.

wink wink nod nod is on the mark.

The legacy Dell folks are dismissing the opportunity to grow their skills and their business.

As a customer, I've seen the dismissal of EMC teams by Dell teams first hand.

The EMC teams were correct- our problem was one that could bring us down without proper planning. The Dell experts said their new peers were blowing things up and trying to sell us things that we didn't need. This was not the case.

We are going to hire a consultant to advise us on the best route.

I thought Dell EMC were merged?

Not what I saw. Dell teams are still competing and trying to get transactions.

At minimum it's a power struggle that's just getting ramped up.

What a mess. EMC teams are in a different league and can find homes at any company. Dell better wise up.

After several trips to RR, it's become clear to me that planning on sticking around isn't a good use of time. It's a distraction from the more productive activity of finding a new job at a company that's prepared to succeed, rather than simply shore up their delusions of grandeur. Dell minions seem to be under the impression that they "own" legacy EMC folks, and all our input is taken with a grain of salt -- wink-wink-nod-nod -- regardless of whether or not they have the experience and the depth to really grok the complexities of what's being discussed. Serious disconnect from reality, which can surely drag even the best of intentions and skillsets into the yawning abyss.

I also agree with what you are saying about pushing us 'old timers' out the door. This '57 Chevy is too old/slow to keep up, the maintenance is expensive and the gas mileage is terrible.....hehe. I was actually glad I got the package and looking forward to new opportunities at a smaller company that appreciates what we have to offer.

Wow, it's very rare that women looses her job at Dell. Are u engineering or some other department. I too was discriminated and harassed by my lady boss, and eventually lost my job but there is nothing I can do.

I agree 100% with that you wrote.

I was discriminated and harassed against.

But mgt does not care. Hell my boss told me that I made my male peers look bad and I needed to do less work.

That is why I was laid off cause I made them look bad. I asked my boss if that sounded better in his head.

So I have found something else but I am also suing. I won the first round see what happens in settlement.

I don't want to sue just give me my job back and get rid of the good ole boys. That would be a better way. I will also have a talk with MD see what he says so he knows what is going on in his precious company..
