Thread regarding Cabela's Inc. layoffs

The Real Story

The real story with the layoff that took place today is the fact that just a few weeks ago, Cabela's top 4 executives received over $2 million in cash bonuses. If there are any reporters reading this, that's the story and is what should be written about. How is it that Cabela's is so bad off, they need to layoff 71 people, but is well enough off to pay its top executives million dollar bonuses at the same time? Reporters should be relentlessly questioning this and holding the company accountable. It's a shame that employees lose their job while a few get rich. I don't know what happened to businesses caring about their employees and sacrificing together, but don't ever let another manager at Cabela's tell you that being an Outfitter makes you part of the "family". There's no family here, no humanity, only worker ants being taken advantage of everyday until their number is up.

Past leadership issue. - are you kidding me, how long has Tommy been here and they are now addressing. Tommy is the issue, he is not a puppet. Get real

I was in Sidney in December and interviewed several small business owners there. I'd be happy to follow up if there are some who have closed or downsized. Please send them my way... paige.yowell@owh.com

I think a few things are funny with this "post". First, Tommy is a CEO, he does what the board tells him. Second, where's the facts on the bonus and layoff timing. Or is this the comp/bonus shareholders voted on? The cuts were made because they needed to be made. So much "fat" due to previous leadership, not due to current. The merchandisers unit was soooo overloaded. As for customer service I heard they have like 600-700 open seats. All of the eggs are in one basket and they can't hire. That's why they have had like 3 VPs in the last 2 years. Same with most of the "upper" leadership. About time something was done for both of those groups.

Question for everyone. Be honest!

Would you trade a small town for a lottery win (50 million)?

Tommy calls the shots, thus a huge salary.

Actually Tommy is not simply a figurehead- he is the leader of the company and and anything that happens is ultimately his decision and by his direction. He is a very inept leader, everyone knows that and he bears full responsibility for the downfall of a once great company. Servant Leadership- the book he touts as his gospel - hmmm, he gets an F- on following in the footsteps of the traits laid out within the book. All management reports to him, period. He isn't powerless, he has surrendered himself with losers like himself and the gig is up. If we had a board with any corporate balls, they would clean out the top ASAP and get true users and leaders on board. Like it or not, Tommy is THE issue.

Tommy is just a figure-head that gets a fat check, basically powerless.

The bigger problem is management, pretty much at all levels

The decision-makers are largely refugees from Wal-Mart and other big box retailers.

You have top brass making policy that don't know what Cabelas customers require and want.

Customer service--helping customers find what they need or want built Cabelas.

Only the little people in the stores care about that.

The former lettuce-shucking Wal-Mart types do not. They continue to slash payroll in the stores, which is the one place not to cut back.

It's pretty simple. If you don't staff enough on the floor, you can't give customers what they need or want.

The decline continues...there are too many chiefs in the company that really don't know what they are doing, because they have never done it!

Hey Paige Yowell why don't you right a article about the silent loosers of this fallout. The small businesses that were forced to close and or reduce because of this corporate fiasco.

Yes it is sad that so many of the cabelas employees are getting the shaft they are not the only one suffering in the town

Or is that not important to you? Because it does not have the cabelas name attached to it and it is not controversial enough for you and your paper?

Cabelas was built by hardworking midwestern people who cared for each other. Report this so the Walmart, Home Depot, Wall Street people are exposed. Maybe they will leave and give Cabelas and Sidney a second chance.

i watched a family members dream destroyed because of the ineptitude of the management team.

I watched cabelas as a young man in Sidney grow and Sidney grow with it.

I watched as young men and women with an entrepreneurial spirit return to their home town to pursue their dreams and ambitions of business ownership.

Only to be destroyed by the greed and petty childishness of the community and Cabelas. So many have left with nothing but bad memories and bitter feelings because of the hideous social and economic situation that is so prevalent in this once proud community.

The only reason I will not leave is due to the fact I own my home outright and for see no foreseeable of sale as well as I am retired.

I to was once a loyal Cabelas customer. I refuse to spend one dime or darken the doors of any of their stores ever again.

Tommy and his gang of Miscreants should be ashamed of themselves of the copious amount of lives destroyed by the mismanagement and greed

Congratulations bozos on a job well done.

May you rot in hell for what you have done.

As a loyal customer I will never set foot in nor spend another penny with them what scoundrels. Shame on you, Tommy, ruining the finest, most customer centric company in the industry. You are a disgrace

If you step back and really look at what tommy and his team have done, they have driven an incredible company into the ground and for that, they are being rewarded. There are so many people that lived the green life as hard working cabelas employees and have been labeled and fired by this team of inept losers. And think of the ones that are now advisors, still pulling in tons of money after being fired and because of poor results, 71 more people pay the price. Where is the leadership here, tommy. What do you call it, servent leadership. Hardly, more like highway robbery.

it is a sad sad situation, these deserving individuals in positions of trust end up the winners and a secure and privileged future, whilst those who were taken advantage of loose their future, their income their homes etc.

Not to mentioned all the small business owners who have had to close as well/

The people are deserving of their multi million dollar bonuses for the grand ineptitude. It is emblematic of today's society were greed, deviousness selfishness are rewarded and were hard work and honesty is penalized.
