Yep the good ole boy system was deeply entrenched within the company. They tried to change it over the past few years but it was too late and some that allowed it all these years were/are still somehow involved with the day to day operations. Good ole boy system leads to laziness and no motivation. You become stagnant, you do just enough to make a contribution, if that. It was frustrating, no matter how hard you worked, if you weren't part of the right circle, you weren't going anywhere! Did I make mistakes, yes, but it wasn't because I sat around and half a$$ed things. I wanted to make a difference! Too bad I wasted too many years busting my a$$ for nothing. I was lucky to get out when I did. I'm sorry for the future of Sidney but Cabela's did this to themselves!!!!!

happens in many private and newly public companies but it is the norm here.
Personal Assessment time in the good ole boy and gal network at least for the family members probably went like....
"with your drive and passion for learning you will make a great Manager/Director of >>>>>> . I know you don't have the experience in this field but this will help round out your talents." Everyone knows you have skills ( Code for family high up the ladder) so you will do fine"
Will a 50% raise be satisfactory?"
Interesting in that he attempted to gather a bunch of investors to buy the company out before the bass deal was finalized. As those in the industry are saying - too late - he and other top dogs made their millions by taking it public. And who would rebuild. The users who connect with the consume base have all been kicked out. Wet dream that failed
Why would you pick on the kids. True the ones that are or were at director level aren't educated enough or experienced enough to function at that level, but the real blame needs to be directed to Dennis Highby ... the board member who voted his shares to sell to Bass Pro. What a greedy, spineless tool. They could have voted their shares to fend this off but they are complet puss-ies.
I always thought Sarah was sharp, kind and knew her stuff. My two cents. I was laid off years ago.
Definitely a Highby family business!! All of them could be cut loose. They either have rentals, agricultural interests or two of the three daughters have jobs outside of Cabela's. They wouldn't be hurt. The one son-in-law complains he pays too much in income tax anyway! Solve that problem by getting laid off! They are too protected!!
OMG I totally needed this laugh to start the day - "it is horrible that you are singling out this family for such ridicule. They have not done anything to harm you or the company. I n fact they have done much for Cabelas and the community." Seriously? Pretty much everyone knows that the Highby family has been coddled. No harm done by all of those $100,000+ salaries, equity awards, and bonuses to Highby family members including son, daughter, and three son-in-laws that I know of? I beg to differ. In the Corporate America that exists outside of Cabelas each of those 5 would have had to actually compete and earn their positions based on their education, skills and experience and NOT their family ties - I don't know of a single one that would have made the cut! This is one of many such failings that have contributed to the fall of a once great company.

The golden children
It wouldn't hurt my feelings if they got laid off. But, I'm sure there were back door negotiations (with a lot of vaseline used--get the pix?) to keep them employed and pegged for movement to Springfield, MO if and when the buyout happens. The husband of the daughter whose mother works in HR is as absolutely dumb and as useless at tits on a boar. If they got laid off, I'm sure the old man on the board would piss and moan about it too much to Tommy boy! Heard he was selling his rentals in anticipation of having to move.
So what are you saying?
