I think we all know by now that HPE discriminates against older folks. See http://hpagediscriminationinvestigation.com/ and supporting links there… I will leave it at that.
What is clearly less-often commented on, is that HPE culture is fundamentally hostile to military veterans. I don’t think that this is legally actionable at all… It is too “fluffy”, soft, and vaguely culturally defined. I don’t think that it’s even conscious, from Meg and On High, like the age discrimination thing is… The anti-military-vet bias is unconscious. But trust me, it is VERY MUCH there!
Now, I am frankly surprised that it’s still out there, at “Glassdoor”, what with Glassdoor’s propensity to take down reviews that are critical of the employers that advertise jobs on Glassdoor… Glassdoor “knows which side of the bread that their butter is on”, if you will. But if you want the LONG version of what I will shortly summarize, then see "HP’s Work Culture is Fundamentally Hostile to the Very Best Values of Veterans of the USA’s Armed Services" at https://www.glassdoor.com/Reviews/Employee-Review-Hewlett-Packard-RVW8892343.htm ...
So the brief preview-summary is, this is hardy legally actionable… It’s too “fluffy”. You’re a veteran, and HPE has already “thanked you for your service” by laying you off? So as to make more room for H-1B indentured servants? Welcome to the club! Sorry to say, there’s little chance of legal recourse for you… Move along, now… This is more-so, a warning to currently-employed-at-HPE military veterans.
OK then, to the heart of the matter: In the military, you learned teamwork. We literally worked together, or we died together. And there was the “hazing” thing, where they yelled at us, with the drill instructor’s spittle flying in our face, from inches away. We had to OBEY, and put the good of the team at the TOP of the list! No whiners, crybabies, or egotistical “prima donnas” were allowed! Those types of folks MUST be driven out of the military, and other dangerous professions (police, firefighters, oil-field roughnecks), where teamwork is a life-and-death matter.
From time to time, we read of people crippled (or even killed, God forbid) in “hazing” incidents, in marching bands, college frats, etc. … In organizations where such “hazing” or “driving out the egotists” has no real place, at all!
Well, here is your summary: In the military, anti-egotist “hazing” had its place… As did, a firm respect for your superiors in rank, and in seniority in the work unit.
At HPE? If the “hazing” lasts for more than, I would say, 3 months… This is an arbitrary time figure… Do NOT*, any longer, merely figure that your co-workers are merely “testing” you, to drive out the egotists! Under the dog-eat-dog spirit resulting from HPE’s “forced distribution” performance reviews, your co-workers are sabotaging you, setting you up to be laid off! Instead of them! The teamwork you learned in the military? It will HURT you, at HPE! If you as a military vet can stand to invert your finest values… Then the only way to survive at HPE, is to constantly cover your own backside, instead of covering the backsides of your co-workers! You MUST** document these kinds of things when they happen, and report them to your supervisor… And then cross your fingers, and hope that your supervisor actually has a clue… If you are to survive the dog-eat-dog battlefield at HPE! (Your enemy is your co-worker, per policies set from Meg and Her Minions On High).
