Yeah, I'd worked there since almost the beginning, and a lot of the people laid off with me were in the same boat. They rewarded sticking with the company by getting rid of us first in the most unprofessional, impersonal way possible. The head of our department just "happened" to be on vacation, so she was on a video conference call as some lower manager gave us the news. Department head didn't say a word the whole time. The CEO was nowhere to be found, then characterized laying off over 5% of his HQ staff (and almost the entire editorial dept) as a "small number of eliminations" or "streamlining".
During the firing process, HR sent people to our desks to get our stuff, since we weren't allowed back to get them or say goodbye to people. When it was all over, the HR people who laid us off went into Motel Bar (the only bar by the office) which naturally, was full of people they just fired.
