Working from Home

How come some managers at STCH allow some people to work from home and not others?! These people only live 20 minutes away!! ..and the ones that live 40 miles away are not allowed....favoritism!!! Needs to stop! Shell did away with 'working from home' years ago... enforce it!

As a general rule, people that "work from home" don't work an honest day's work. There are exceptions, but not many.

You can setup a xml file on your machine the will allow you to put your MOC on "call", "meeting", "conference " anything you'd like, making you boss think you're busy. I know a few people that did that. Couple others have an app installed that keeps their machines from going "away" and sleep, making it look like they're always there. Time to call everyone back to the office

Many companies like IBM, Yahoo, Exxon, Chevron, and many other energy companies are calling remote workers back to the office

Do away with working from home and here's why. I know a manager over STCH whose close family member also works from home for Shell, started a home business using Shell's time and equipment. Major conflict of interest . Both should be terminated

There's no way to monitor a green MOC. They could monitor computer activity but those Indians folks wouldn't know how to make that work. In the meantime, green light away!

And believe me, there are ways we can track down green lighters, my friend. Keep having your spouse help you out. You'll be fired by 31/12/17.

Love it!! "control freak from the 90's"?; look, a*hle, you try managing a group of people who have divergent, professional and personal, goals who are thrown together through no fault of theirs or yours but you have to make sure everything works, and you're accountable for whether it succeeds or it doesn't. Control freak? -yeah, if your job and responsibilities count on having your staff deliver results? really, let some slacker "work" from home? Really?? you must be some JG5 or less that can't see over the top of your own cube. We will find out who you green light slackers are...really,...you are done.

Another control freak stuck in the 90's. Wake up a--hole, the world has changed. Many people work for home for a win-win as it saves companies money and make employees happy. How is that wrong?

Working from home can be ok. It's just the demoralizing doublestandard with which its enforced and not just at STCH.

Bottom line.... working from home should not be allowed period. I've seen too many people abuse it over the years. There is no way to monitor their work. So, you people that are fighting this issue, just simply drive to the office every day just like the rest of us and deal with it, don't cry and man up!

Yeehaw, commuting time in Houston, London or any other major city. What, 2 hours total back and forth, 5 days a week? BS! Then 8 hours in the cube?? Does that make sense when most days you're on line or on the phone?? Look, 2 days in the office on agreed days; otherwise, call me on my cell, txt me or I'm on line. Mgt needs to lay down guidelines applicable to staff - help your employees know what's expected and help them balance their work responsibilities. Call a meeting and speak up, you gutless wonders. Jeez....

Woohoo! I'm done; retired from Shell after 30 years!! 😁 Pensioned, ($$ monthly) medical, dental...so happy to be away from that rat farm. Life is good here in the Rockies on the other side; you 40/50 something's with 15/20 years will never be so fortunate. SO....work from home, what a privilege! and enjoy life while you can!..🎱

Indeed it gets abused, and even I abuse it too. At home there are too many distractions. I'm more productive at the office than working from home. Downside to driving to the office is the commuting cost for those that live far from the office .... $0 for those that work from home. I agree that Shell needs to make changes in this area.

Yikes, me thinks last poster had one too many reds last evening! Rules: (1) Work from Home - set specific requirements; or (2) No Working from Home - show up at the hot desk at 7am tomorrow; if anyone in "management" might be interested in topics/opinions on this site, better listen to this one because issues like this can undermine all you think is going well with your staffs' morale. Peace.

I agree with the original poster.... and I agree people don't get his point. People don't want this abuse to get out cause Shell will take it away-----then deal with as---le!!. It is well know managers do play the favoritism game and I have proof thanks to othes that went thru the same sh--. NO MORE WORKING FROM HOME!!

Look, show up tomorrow morning, ask that there be a meeting convened this week so that everyone in your unit/department/area has a clear understanding/definition of what's required to work from home and when reporting to the cube is required. Really, leaders need to lay out the requirements clearly but cackling here on this website blah-blahing does nothing; get off your a&& and make a difference. Hold leaders accountable to lead. Get answers to a reasonable question: "under what circumstances can I work from home"? This isn't so f***ing hard. And you are intelligent, professionals? Holy smokes. Want a "I Participated" trophy?

To the original poster, your an idiot. There has been and will always be staff that home office. Field personal all home office. Many support positions do not face to face daily oversight. You have a job and are probably over paid and under worked because most office staff are. If you are on 9/80 program consider yourself blessed as American companies don't believe in such perks. They are on the 14/120 program. You have been nurtured under the cradle to grave Euro program for too long. Pray you never have to work for Americans because you will never make it.

Why does Shell allow full time employees work from home and not contractors? We work longer hours and do more work than the employees!! Everyone needs to start driving in!

Some people's cages are being rattled! One of my teammates, who works from home, figured out how to keep his machine from going to sleep and keep MOC green all the time, while at the same time forwarding all calls to his cell. MOC displays "forwarding call to ....." if the 'Forward Number' feature has been turned on. Now think-- if he works from home, why does he need to forward his number? If you ping him, it takes him hours to reply, which is normally the next day and with the "sorry I didn't get back to you yesterday " excuse.

If working from home is allowed, why did my manager called for a meeting to tell us all that Shell was not going to allow it anymore, and the folks that were remote had 2 years to either move to Houston or look for another job. Why would he lie???

A co-worker of mine sometimes works from home, and once told me he walks his dog in the mornings and sometimes even mows his lawn around lunch time, when there is less of a chance to be pinged by someone

Yes it is "favoritism", so what? Is that a surprise to you, I hope not. The advice given by the "former Shell Manager" made me throw up just a little in my mouth. The soft headed ill-advised tripe this fellow is pushing is what you will need that hefty Shell paystub and bonus to wash down every hour you sit in traffic. No sympathy from me.

My manager works from home.... and I once tried to ping him on MOC since it showed him 'green'.... no reply. Couple hours later pings me back and tells me "he was taking his dog for a walk". Would you call that an abuse of a 'privilege'?

Working from home status is earned, not a given right. I'm a former Shell manager. Some folks will get even more done working in a less structured environment, some, however, will abuse the privilege of balancing work and personal life. A 2 hour commute round trip is unproductive, but affordable housing is an issue for those that can't buy into Memorial or River Oaks. Nothing replaces face-to-face connection with colleagues over a coffee exchanging ideas about where we go from here. Just earn your pay every day, be productive, offer up well-thought-out proposals and you'll do fine, i.e., stay employed.

So you have to drive a little further, get the f-- over it. You can move closer or quit but stop whining. Your probably some over paid under worked snow flake that was promoted for all of the wrong reasons. You have job with benefits, s--- it up.

Shell never 'never did away' with working from home. It's always depended on your managers approval. With the closure of the downtown office it being recognized by Real Estate, and HR as a valid and needed option too providing adequate workspace.
