Thread regarding Altice USA (Cablevision) layoffs

REASONS WHY...

Reasons why everyone needs to unite and continue to move forward as a group, not individually.

Management's argument is the same as always, to give them a chance. Well, we did give them a chance and where are we now? We are still arguing the same points we have been arguing for years. What has been done? What have they done to show that they have listened? They listened time and time again, and the results are always negative for the employees. We have lost sick time, they have increased insurance premiums, created a new company , ATS, with no regard to any of their employees. All these changes, logistics being eliminated, techs being forced out with a "buyout", forced into early retirement after putting in so many years . Consolidating everything, from call centers and the warehouse in Edison employees being forced out to work for another company, where does it end? We need to remember what was said, that nothing will change, however , nothing but changes is what we have experienced. Let's not ignore the facts of what is happening here, it's not me against you or us against them, it's us for us. They don't worry about you, we need to worry about each other. We have given management a chance, we owe it ourselves to give unity and ourselves a chance. " OLD ways won't open NEW doors."

Why not union? Not looking for a lashing, just honest views, experiences etc.

Mr Savage I honestly don't have answers for those questions. However no junior tech is making $40/hr never have and never will. As matter of fact only a small% of each Depot have techs making that kind of money and it's likely that's it's less then 5% of the population

The problem with most of those posting on this forum have no concept of how a business operates. Everyone just throws around conspiracies as facts. If Altice wanted to get rid of employees they would just do it. They wouldn't spend time and effort to create a"fake" company to make it happen. If they wanted contractors they would just hire them. They don't need to hide it. Enough with the scare tactics. What you are told and what is happening is actually happening. And no, there is never a guarantee of what happens next, that is called life. It's the same guarantee you were hired under cablevision by. You want to control your future? Work hard, learn your craft, and you will be able to market yourself. Just like everyone else in this world.

I'm not a union shill, I'm just an ignorant tech searching for answers that I'm unable to get from management.

It's unfortunate that I'm able to obtain more information here than if I were to ask my sup or manager.

My apologies for what I had said in my previous post. I stated "1099 contractor" when I really meant to say "contractor".

I have a few legitimate questions for the smart guys in the room:

  • Is there anything that would prevent Altice from changing your employment status to 1099 in 2018?

  • Would the NY Public Service Commission have any say in the matter?

  • Would being unionized in ATS prevent them from pulling such a move?

  • Do you think we'd EVER be able to unionize under Barry's watch?

  • With all the drastic cost cutting, downsizing, and outsourcing that they've already done; is it really a stretch to think that Altice will want to do some trimming of technicians?

  • Is Altice okay with paying junior techs over $40/hr ?

  • Is Altice okay having 150+ field service techs working in the Bronx in addition to the TSI contractors working in (5,6, and 7) ?

Please no lies. Below are the facts

ATS techs are not 1099 contractors. They are non-exempt W2 employees. They were all required to fill out an federally required I9 form to verify they are legally allowed to work in the US. This form needs to be completed by anyone being hired to a new company as is the case with ATS.

Federal contractors are individuals or employers who enter into a contract with the United States (any department or agency) to perform a specific job, supply labor and materials, or for the sale of products and services.

Form 1099-Misc is a tax form that reports the year-end summary of all non-employee compensation. The 1099-Misc form covers rent, royalties, self-employment and independent contractor income, crop insurance proceeds and several other kinds of miscellaneous income.

I wish you people would stop spreading false information. A 1099 does not make you a contractor. It is simply a form verifying your legal right to work in the U.S.

Mr. Savage you're obviously uninformed. We are not 1099 contractors. I'm guessing you are a union shill.

The point is we are all in this together, we all have the same problems and issues with the company. We now have the opportunity to make a posiitve difference, like Mister Savage said and VOTE YES. YES TO A VOICE, YES TO SOMETHING WE CAN ALL TAKE PART IN, A UNION. NOT ONE GREATER THAN THE OTHER, ALL TOGETHER.

"We can not be blinded or ignore the truth of situation"

Over 1300 field technicians were blinded and ignoring the truth when they voluntarily separated themselves from Altice in order to become a 1099 contractor.

I'm well aware of what has happened in each Depot, this serves as a reminder because seems like sometimes people forget when this all started. Why this all happened? We can not be blinded or ignore the truth of situation. We need to think of all that's happened from the beginning ,all the changes, open our eyes. Not lose our focus on our duty to ourselves, our fellow employees and our families to remain United, UNIONIZED.

You must be new to the website. Everything you say is valid but we're far beyond just complaining about management. Scroll back several pages of this thread for proof.

Those of us that are still left have already taken action. Back on March 1st, technicians in Oakland voted in the union. Next week, technicians in Newark will vote in their union election. The Brooklyn depot are under their CBA until 2019. Other shops across the footprint are in the process of organizing.

The thinking right now is for all shops to follow this trend in giving ourselves a voice and just not lay down and allow Altice to eliminate what little we have left.

NEWARK VOTE YES
