BIG COMPANY JOB HUNTING

Lessons Learned From Job Search: The new way of the world, adapt or be crushed. Loyal employees that stay at one position too long without getting promoted are getting thrown under the bus in this environment. The ones getting ahead are the ones that are constantly job hoping either internally or externally, especially in the first 10-20 years of career. Job changes to feed the family are also being frowned upon these days. Also older employees are being thrown under the bus big time. Hard lessons to learn, if you dont like it do something elese like teaching.

Don't quit and take advantage of any opportunities you get.

Good for you family is more important than anything elese. I have a gap on my resume and employers don't like it. But let me tell you if was the best time in my life and I was to spend quality time with my children and it has payed big dividends. Who cares about these corporate smucks who dony know squat, and deep down are probably jealous that they don't have a gap on their rssume and have never had time to smell the roses.

Yep, you need to be selfish in this new world.

Was definitely thrown under the bus for staying in my position for 8 years. When I was laid off back in 2006, career advisers tell you to stay max around 3 years. I always had this in my head but sacrificed since I had younger children in school and didn't want to affect my sched and I thought I was doing my dept a favor. Then boom, chopped last fall! Yes, please move around and retrain or get out of the IT biz altogether when your getting to 50s and over.

Seems like you might be better off quiting and going to an another company while you are ahead. You almost have to, the way companies make mass terminations these days for no good reason, except for a short bump in stock price.
