Thread regarding Cabela's Inc. layoffs

Thanks Cabelas!

For keeping us on our toes and enabling hiring freezes in this town of Sidney. Real classy. Move now if you can.

The city needs to reconsider Hickory Square what a waste of money. Another business gone along with tax dollars. We need another business to relocate and bring more then minimum wage jobs

And now Nienhueser Construction is going out of business. Still blaming the uncertainty of Cabelas though!

Not sure where you're getting your information, but the hospital is NOT on a hiring freeze. Just another sad example of people talking about stuff they know nothing about.

I'm glad I didn't succumb to the koolaid, the grass is greener in other places and they don't smell like a feedlot all day and night

When I left Sidney / Cabelas I was angry, frustrated and hurt. Sold my house at a very nice profit. Now when I read what is going on there I realize what a blessing we had to leave 3 years ago. What a blessing the Spirit above bestowed on our family ! The Lord looks out for some of us for sure !

It's going to get worse before it gets better in reading some of the posts here. I'm surprised to read that even local lenders are getting hesitant with those that have jobs out of the community and generating cash flow can't obtain a loan. But, then it doesn't surprise me when a lot of the I-80 development going on right now and previously is being financed through Scottsbluff banks. Millner, the CAB board of directors and Paul Singer need to bear all of the responsibility for what's going on right now at CAB and in Sidney. The BOD needed to stand up to Singer's Elliot and Associates, but instead acquiesced. I'm sure at Millner's urging to save his bacon. And why not--Millner made $4.17 million dollars from Cabela's in 2015. Probably more when the sale to Bass was officially announced and stock options were exercised! It will be interesting to see what his final 2016 salary numbers are! There in lies most of the problem with publicly traded companies' CEOs. The CEOs seem to think that they're entitled to huge salaries and bonuses when in fact the majority of them are not! Millner couldn't even handle the pressure of the situation and had to promote Scott Williams to president of CAB so Williams could handle the day to day management activities. With the ineptitude of the situation, the whole community suffers!

I've had the same Sidney bank experience. I left a good Cabela's management position 1 year ago when I saw the direction the company was headed. I recently called my Sidney bank for a home equity loan on my mortgage-free Sidney house that I can't get sold in Sidney's stagnant real estate market. I have a very good credit rating and a debt-free Sidney house yet the bank won't give me an equity loan for 3 reasons - 1) I no longer live in Sidney, 2) the bank's fear related to the rapid devaluation of Sidney homes and how ugly the market's bottom will likely be & 3) the sheer number of unsold homes for sale in Sidney and fear of a glut of defaults/foreclosures. Nice job Cabela's! A company that simply could not think and act with a modern day strategic growth business philosophy and as a result of it's management failures will have devastated the lives of countless Outfitters and their families. Awesome legacy Cabelas!

The banks are tightening up. No longer live in Sidney and no longer work for Cabela's. But I still have an active checking account at a bank in Sidney. Called them up for a small loan. Was denied because the bank just put in a policy that the borrower has to live in the area. Even though my credit is good and still bank with them. They said they hate losing the business but policy is policy. So much for Sidney!

Wow the trickle down is happening. Such a shame since the new hospital just barely opened. I was wondering what has gone on. I haven't heard much from friends who are still there. Not sure if its out of fear or just not knowing.

Not the original poster here, but due to the uncertainty of Cabelas I've heard that the local hospital is on a hiring freeze that will last for 1 year starting this month. Not looking too good for this town since Cabelas, the hospital, banks, and county jobs are what is keeping us going. Unless you work multiple part-time food/retail/ hotel jobs here you'll survive . But it seems like all the good jobs are on hold for now.
