Apparently this was the case for my layoff. My direct manager knew a they were losing someone a week ahead of time, but they didn't get to pick this time. Good times. The interesting part is who they kept. I was solidly middle of the pack, as far as performance metrics, so that means they kept people at the bottom. Fun times for those that got to stay that's for sure.

1gfc is exactly right. I was laid off because of a Sr. director. Unfortunately, a few months ago he asked for my honest opinion about a new process and I gave it to him. I was professional, told him what the issues where and how they could be fixed. The politics at EMC are so thick now, compared to years ago, that it was enough to get me on his list. My boss didn't know, but nor did he try to defend me. He doesn't want to get on the list either. It musical chairs there now. Who will get a seat?
You need to understand that most direct line managers don't know until they have to lay somebody off.
It is coming from the director levels not lower. I got laid off my boss didn't even know about it until a couple hours prior to laying people off.
Dude no heads up whatsoever.. if you get called early for a meeting out of the ordinary take that as a heads up
