Intel's crumbling automotive business

Qualcomm said on Wednesday that French carmaker PSA Group plans to integrate its infotainment systems processor in next generation vehicles.

The Snapdragon 820A processor is expected to begin appearing in select PSA vehicles as from 2020.

This morning, Qualcomm also announced its collaboration with ZTE and China Mobile on trials at 3.5 GHz to accelerate 5G deployments in China.

Finally, the San Diego-based company unveiled with GE and Nokia a private LTE-based trial network customized for industrial Internet of things (IoT).

Automotive makes up about 98% of Intel's vision for IoT, as the old PC guys are not able to think beyond their "IoT is just like making small PCs" idea. So if automotive fails for Intel, then it's all byebye for IoT at Intel.

The processor guys at Intel simply aren't able to produce power efficient chips that can compete with ARM. That already caused Aicha's Intel architecture ambitions in the modem to fail, because she just couldn't get an Intel architecture chip that would be suitable for a modem. She still doesn't have one.

It will be the same in IoT. An Intel chip in a smartwatch? Do you really want to use your smartwatch as a branding iron on your arm?

Intel in cars was like intel promises in mobile and tablets.

Rack up lots of press and noise, lose billions and pack up another tombstone to intel failure in anything but x86

They cost structure, tech plug and lastly management doesn't know how to compete or listen to customers as it has failed time and again and not much will change till BK and the rest of the x86 old guard with new innovative and open thinkers

All of Intel's Auto accomplishments have been sound bites. DD, while a good guy, will not be able to turn that ship around to where it needs to be.
