Apple Developing New Mac Chip in Test of Intel Independence.

Apple stuck to its plan over the past 6 years. Everyone laughed at Apple years ago when then said they would do this... Apple is not Intel, that is for sure.

unless intel offers compelling value and compelling price, performance, features compared to apple rolling their own, intel is in trouble.. in fact, it has been making incremental updates for several chip generations now.. people are content with good old Sandy Bridge.. why even bother with Kaby Lake unless you care about DRM which only the greedy content owners really care about?

Apple reviews every year intel roadmap and evaluates their own ARM designs and sees what pricing concessions they get. So far the pricing BK approves keeps Apple in the fold, but the Lakes are late and current offerings very uncompelling 😉

We understand what the chips does; more importantly we understand what the Intel chip does not do. Apple already has the chips working and expects to have this in MACs later this year.

With TSMC ramping 10nm this year and 7nm next year the choice to move away from intel is logical. TSMC silicon has more features, is easier to design in, and now they have process leadership to and that should give MACs both the OS as well as process leadership over WinTel machines accelerating x86 decline. The benchmark of the iPhone7 already says what the fruity design team can do and when combined with superior process they will crush the Wintel machines.

A long time ago Apple used Motorola 6800 and later switched to PowerPC and then intel seeking superior process. Time to move again as TMG leadership has slipped away. They know well how to migrate OS to new architecture and it isn't like they don't know what to do with their phones.

So both OP and MSN didn't understand what that chip actually does.
