Yes it was usually around the end of January or sometime in February that there were a lot of employees who were let go from the retail stores. Some of them were even re-hired...

Used to be, those hired for Christmas help were generally let go in late December or in very early January. I'm spitballing here, but probably their economic development plans with various communities probably require them to have x number of employees throughout the year and they achieve that by keeping the part timers (Christmas help mostly) on the whole month of January and then let them go in February. That way, they could count those towards the employment ceilings required in the EDP. So many months that a part timer is on the payroll counts towards a full time equivalent. Just a guess.
