They spent millions on the new cash office machines by Revionics. Would be cheaper to keep employees.

You gotta laugh at the automation wave going on. Eventually my job will be replaced by a kiosk with a touchscreen to make a SKU selection and a robot will bring out the product from a doggie door out of the warehouse.

They are getting rid of the cash office in Hamburg to go automated. There is more to the cash office than counting money. If this works in the biggest store then look out smaller stores because you will be next!

What happened in Billings?

They already got rid of HR! They let all the good people go (or gave them a hourly option) and hired cheaper labor that did not have experience. The company lost a boat load of knowledge and left it up to the GM's to make decisions. (Look at recent decisions and scandals in Billings) How can they expect to avoid harassment lawsuits. Home Depot brought back the HR function.

The problem is not simply a " save money" maneuver. It is about the customer and the employees that they are in contact with there are numerous examples of downsizing that look great on paper although they do not support the end customer - that is the key in common sense terms which makes no sense within the company. The same thing happened at Nordstrom - take away a key department that supports the ultimate customer and, bang, sales decline. Numerous examples of this not working which makes it very interesting to watch. And unfortunately very sad. They should know better.

If it saves money, it makes sense.
