Thread regarding Marathon Oil Corp. layoffs

Do you think that pros outweigh the cons in regards to working at Marathon and/or the oil and gas industry as a whole?

The industry as a whole should not be held to the awful standards MRO is at presently. I have friends at other companies who are too feeling the pain of the down turn, but not quite as bad as MRO. Yes I'm a petrotech if that helps put things in context.

Petrotechs especially Geos are a joke at MRO. That's not good for a company supposedly looking for hydrocarbons.

Good luck to all and may the odds be ever in your favor.

I assume you are speaking about a working in a support group (ie. HR, Accounting, IT, etc). Because no petrotechnical folk would ask such a question.

Let us use the example of accounting (because I know Marathon just hired on an accountant). Someone like that probably came from a firm as probably didn't have any industry specific experience. If they are looking down the road to gain some industry experience.. sure.. no biggie.. easy to come and go since accounting jobs are plentiful.

As you are aware the industry is cyclical.. Its a down time right now and morale is down.. They are probably milking you for all your worth.. Why do you think there are these openings to begin with? Because people that filled these positions have left willingly to find a job that might not be paying as much but in a company where the atmosphere is better. That being said.. Marathon is having to overpay to attract attract people to fill these empty position(s) for the support groups.. (i have been told by other accountants that headhunters are calling around.. especially within the industry..)..

Take these facts as it is.. make a choice based on your career aspersions..
