it now turns out that one of the layoffs was the National Dean of Faculty. The story was spun that it was a retirement, but sources report he was shown the door. No tears; he didn't do anything to save faculty who went before him, so what goes around comes around. But it had to have been humiliating to attend your own 'retirement party' and read all the fond farewell notices, knowing you were going on a trip you didn't want to take. Now the plan seems to be to put faculty leadership in the hands of the committee. Probably best to take a wait and see attitude...but more often than not the camel in your barn was supposed to be a horse, until a committee got involved.....which explains the unwanted humps.

The plan is to phase out ALL campuses in 2017

Original poster - why do you think there will be mass layoffs in 2017? Wouldn't that contradict the strategy of growing the programs?

Maybe a better question is - what do you consider "mass" layoffs? Even if we eliminated half of the remaining full time people, that's barely enough to call it a mass layoff. We barely have enough people to keep the place running. A mass layoff at this point would just close the campus. We are expecting targeted layoffs or firings, but we think mass layoffs are over unless we close more campuses.

The voluntary exodus has already begun. At least two of our SSAs have recently interviewed at other companies, one of our faculty is making arrangements to quit and move in with his son, another has been applying to jobs all over the place for months, and my direct supervisor is considering early retirement just to put an end to the BS. These are just the ones I know about. There are surely more.

In addition to mass layoffs, expect large numbers of employees to quit. The organization has reduced head count to the point where the remaining individuals are being asked to do work that was formerly done by two or more people, sometimes people in different departments. As people reach the limits of their tolerance for incompetent management, overwork, and lack of fair compensation, they are going to start walking out the door.
