It’s a huge hit for our community, about 250 people will lose jobs and our economy is frail - there will be huge impacts across the board. CVS main office is located in Woonsocket, RI and it’s a major employer, about 5000 people work there – so, 250 is not a big hit percent-wise but it’s huge from the community perspective as CVS is the major employer, and there are no many other large enterprise options out here. When you think about this, it’s easy to imagine a scenario where some of the families chose to leave RI and now that trickles down to real estate prices, etc, etc.
I do not work for CVS but my sister-in-law was laid off today after 9 years with CVS, she took it really well but she’s the primary earner in the family and they will not be able to survive on my brother’s salary. They will have to figure something out – but since my sister-in-law has a farily specialized expertise she told me that it’ll be almost impossible to find job in RI and they will have to either move or she’ll have to do a career change which will cost them a lot as she’ll not be able to make as much money as she did with CVS prior to being laid off.
Now, if families start to move, what happens to stores, to schools (less kids), etc. etc.
I just hope this is all over soon and that no additional layoffs happen at CVS in 2017 or beyond – it’d be really horrible for our small community.
God bless…
