They Might Be Closing Smaller Under-Performing Stores

I honestly believe that they might be closing the smaller underperforming stores and either giving them a severence package to get the hell out or moving everyone to other stores. I started noticing problems when I first got to this particular store that on most of the days they didn't even have security. They used to have an unarmed guard there during the daytime 7 days a week-loss prevention told them that they were not allowed to do anything and they were supposed to be door greeters. Soon it was cut down to two days out the week-now it's once a week or once every other week we get them. We also have them when corporate decides to come down there so the store doesn't get into trouble for not having security. Then we used to have a police officer 4 times a week only at nighttime and now it's cut down to two times a week during the evenings. We used to have loss prevention twice a week during the day and now it's only twice a month whenever they feel like it. They cut security really bad and they act like they can't afford them. Then again due to thieves coming into the store because of LACK OF security, they walk out of the store taking between $25-30,000 worth of stuff out there-that's where the money is going. They say the items are insured but it takes weeks if not months for the insurance companies to finally issue a check for the stolen items. Then they are cutting hours really bad too. They lower the hours for those who have been with the company for years and give the new hires the all the hours since they don't have to pay them all that extra money having someone with more seniority working. To save money more, they would put you into the system for the wrong job title so they don't have to pay you the regular pay for what you'll be actually doing. For example, they'll put you in the system as a utility clerk and have you cashiering so they could pay you the utility clerk pay instead of the cashier pay rate. There was an email floating around by management not to call in someone to replace an employee that called off, then they wrote that they want the front end folks to send people home if they aren't busy which is a violation of the union contract. I was told you cannot force someone to go home-once you are on that schedule you can't make someone go home-they have to mutually agree upon it. They don't realize that the union contract isn't arbitrary where they could enforce it any way they can. They are doing all they could to reduce hours and manpower to cut hours too. I also noticed that shelves aren't being restocked like they used to either. Then customers complain that we don't have the product they need. They also sit there trying to sell spoiled produce too acting like they're too cheap to order stuff. All of the stuff that I mentioned are indicating that the store we're at might be closing. I also noticed the same trend at other smaller stores too. When people complain to corporate or the union, they don't care anymore and don't do anything about it. I've been through a store closure before and all of the stuff that's been happening now at the smaller stores were the same things that were happening with the stores they were about to pull the plug on. They got really chincy with hours, cut it down to the bare minimum, inventory wasn't put up or changed out like it was supposed to, employees moral was completely down, management sat there trying their best to make severe cuts knowing it violated the union contract or it was a job function that was crucial they cut (ex.: security), they had a screw you attitude toward theft, etc. This type of stuff was happening right before they would close the store and someone up in there got wind that in the next year or two, they wouldn't be surprised if it would be shuttered. They were supposed to do it 10-15 years ago but didn't after the community protested about it. Then they were supposed to do it 5 years ago but didn't.

What people may not understand about Giant Eagle is that you can be a 'regular' employee at corporate HQ, and it's a good paying job. This obviously costs money, and is one of the reasons our prices ARE higher. It costs money to pay people a nice salary. Aldi and Walmart are much larger, so they can absorb this cost a lot easier. Bottom line is Pittsburgh is losing 450 good local jobs, because customers have the right to shop wherever they choose. These are not low paying jobs, and this area will continue to suffer if the good jobs keep leaving, for places like Arkansas and Germany.
