I'm still here but in a precarious position. May I ask what you received? Was it 2 weeks pay for every year worked at WRS?

Thank you

I also was a casualty and agree the severance package has softened the blow. From those I know in Alameda finance and hr the number seems to be high, maybe as high as 400.

Does anyone have rough numbers on the RIF? Sounds pretty major from what I have heard so far. Sounds like sales was mostly impacted.

got my unexpected 1:1 yesterday and I must say at first I was disappointed however after reviewing the severance package I received, and the prospects of other companies that have been reaching out via LinkedIn, this can be a blessing in disguise... Good luck to everyone... I enjoyed my 4 years at Alameda in sales... But time to move on... I will be keeping an eye on wind river to see what happens at the end of the year...

Layoff in progress. Watching boxes leave the building, along with some very good people. I'm told 20% of workforce is being let go today.

I don't think the thoughts expressed here are a joke, although I may not agree with them. I believe that they are a symptom of the insecurities that people are experiencing. Those emotions can be very powerful.

According to FB posts and tweets by Mychal McCabe, Intel has no clue what it's doing in the IOT space, so WR will be indispensable to Intel.

Funny how he took that down and made his profiles private when he got called out about it.

3aza: "not much point keeping any engineering staff in Alameda at this point"

Why keep the rest of Alameda? Intel can do the HR and finance and legal and sales and marketing once they merge Wind River into Intel as announced earlier this year http://fortune.com/2016/01/06/intel-wind-river-intigrate. No need to transfer anyone from Alameda to Intel. The last one out the door can turn off the lights.

The main value of Wind River is the experienced embedded engineers and seasoned embedded software architects. They have exactly the skills Intel needs to do IOT devices properly. And safe or secure systems like space, defence, planes, trains and automobiles. IOT needs the software and hardware to work in concert to be great. As trump would say about such products "They will be fantastic. Wonderful. The best ever."

The customers use the Wind River products and have no alternative that is commercial grade. In fact they need and love those products. So no sales or fat cat management or executives needed to oversee them because the products are mature and on a well known evolution path. So they should get rid of everyone who can't read or write code. Intel can put the gravy train on autopilot and keep it compelling and modern with the Wind River engineers who will likely already know what to do to keep their stuff relevant.

Everybody technical in Ottawa and China should be exempt from layoffs because IOT needs them. And every manager should go because Intel already has too many unless they speak Chinese which will make them useful. The cost savings from that layoff should generate a bag of profits for Intel's IOT group because the money coming into Wind right now will continue to come in. Maybe keep one or two site managers for Ottawa and China to make sure the engineers there don't party too hard and lose too many brain cells when they hear this happened.

Yah there is probably not much point keeping any engineering staff in Alameda at this point. Our U.S. dollar is too high, talent has left, no critical mass anymore and turnover in the Bay area too problematic. Ottawa and China are the two main dev centers now. If you are still at Wind and not in one of those countries, buckle up!

I tend to agree with you.

We used to have great products and engineering support in Alameda, but then Stephen Li opened up the China Development Centre, and we started losing good engineers here in CA, thenceforth.

I've been witness to the downward trend of engineers here in the States and Europe, whilst we went unto China for those functions. I've also been witness to staff that couldn't make it in engineering bailing to become part of Sales as FAEs, thereby lengthening their stay here.

I'm at a loss emotionally. I used to love it here. Many of my mates that brought me here are now gone, and I am starting to look to see what is in my future henceforth.

A bit of advice, if I may: This ship is always rolling, people. It is nothing new. Do not be married to your job, seriously. Be ready to get let go at any time and live with that likelihood (work up your resume NOW, helloooo). I'm not sure why layoffs are even a surprise any more. It is like that anywhere, not just here. Cutbacks happen, and it's not personal. If it is, maybe you can chalk it up to an opportunity for a little self-improvement. But don't get all caught up in the fact that you've "been here for 15 years, so they owe you something". They don't. And...you might be a bit crusty and set in your ways, for that matter so getting voted off the island was inevitable and probably did everyone, including you, a favor. This crusty mindset is a liability for WR/Intel. And it's set WR back quite a lot over the years in the past. Maybe Intel is onto something by letting some of the old guard go.

As for those let go in engineering who managed the Rover project and other outstanding endeavors, lame and lame. We'd have done better keeping you. Most of the above refers to ops, sales and HR/Marketing.

Looking at the posts on this board for this time last year -- people saying there was no way layoffs were coming, but they did and involved some very long term, very productive great employees.

One of them was a very good friend of mine. A few days after WRS let him go, his partner was diagnosed other cancer and passed away a few months later.

For all the people that tell me how great WRS is, I just point this incident out. WRS could care less about any of us.

I tend tithing that Sales will be hit hardest, followed by operations and finance. Intel can handle those functions and will think twice before bring those functions into the fold after integration.
