Macerich has laid off over 1300 employees in the last 8 years. The first round included management level staff in 2008-2009. The second round of layoffs occurred in 2011 when the company outsourced the security department. Prior to that time, the company had its own security department that consisted of over 1000 employees. All security department staff lost their positions within the company when Macerich switched to contract security. All staff were given an opportunity to apply for jobs with the contract security company with a lot being able to retain employment. This was a major event in the company's history and needs to be talked about more.
