Thread regarding ITT Educational Services Inc. layoffs

What are you adjuncts doing these days?

Nationwide there may have been 25,000 adjunct faculty -- 3 times the number of regular employees.

I know many of us were filing complaints about ITT-Tech fraud, and writing to this forum.

Can we qualify for unemployment? Many adjuncts taught multiple classes, working more than 40 hours a week, but did not get full time status because they did not teach SIX classes. Many had no outside job or underemployed. Adjuncts did not get any benefits, or any binding job So maybe nationwide there were quarter to quarter.

Personally, I don't think I qualify for unemployment -- because in July I turned down director's offer for classes fall quarter, so was not "on the roster" after summer quarter ended September 2nd. Also, my ITT email account disappeared before I downloaded or printed my "termination letter" from Sept 6 -- which was a joke anyway, since I was not really an employee! Anyway, after working at a fraud company for 6 years, and rooting for a close-down, I don't feel like making fraudulent claims on unemployment.

So what are the rest of you up to? I am volunteering as math instructor, for non-profit, that is providing free classes in basic skills in math, reading, writing, computers for adults -- the stuff ITT Tech pretended to do in Problem Solving and Strategies classes, but didn't really do. As former math adjunct, I can tell you my students are learning a lot more math in their free classes than students taking $2000 ITT joke "problem solving" class. Hope to build up some references in education that are not from ITT-Tech!

How do you feel about working at another for-profit? Have you found any with good reputations? Are you steering clear of those that are facing their own fraud issues? Most adjuncts I worked with were supportive of ITT-Tech, in faculty meetings, etc. Some were vocal cheerleaders. Wonder if any have changed their minds now.

Here's how I got that 25,000 adjuncts number, based on my own campus employment : The biggest group of employees at ITT-Tech was adjunct faculty, by far. My campus had around 20 adjuncts teaching each quarter. Regular positions added up to around 8 -- no full time academics, a couple reps, four assorted directors, registrar, tech guy. Also a part time LRC manager, and part time receptionist.

Why not apply at DeVry University? I hear they're hiring competent professors?

Most of the adjuncts I met teaching networking and infosec subjects at ITT Tech had jobs elsewhere. It seems like Modany used the 8000 figure for propaganda purposes and it includes people who taught one class a week!

ITT tech had a mixture of adjunct capabilities in those subject area. Some were there purely because they had a degree in a relevant area and had no teaching skills whatsoever, but the best were fully qualified with the requisite number of graduate degree hours in the subject areas and frankly they could dance circles around some of the full time community college instructors I know because they were actually working in the industry.

ITT tech clearly had problems. The management were interfering with academic standards and academic freedom and if ACICS had been awake they would have been called on it. Sad to see an old name go, but it wasn't the same company anymore and as long as the management stayed the same it would have continued down the same path.

"The two ITT tech adjuncts we invited for a teaching demonstration did so horribly that we no longer review resumes that have ITT tech as the most recent teaching experience or the most dominant with regards of time spent teaching for ITT tech on them. "

Funny. That sort of resume bias on two data points is exactly what we won't accept at my institution.

If you were teaching 5 classes per quarter your campus was violating labor policy. Adjuncts were supposed to be restricted to 12 classes within a 9 month period (no more than 4 per quarter). Otherwise you were entitled to benefits under the Affordable Care Act.

We've had ITT tech adjuncts knocking on our door. Won't take them though. The vast majority don't have the qualifications to teach at a 'regular' school. For example - we require 18 graduate credit hours in the subject matter the adjunct will be teaching. So far few of the ITT tech adjuncts meet that requirement. We also require that the graduate degree come from a regionally accredited school. Very few of the ITT tech adjuncts meet that requirement. The two ITT tech adjuncts we invited for a teaching demonstration did so horribly that we no longer review resumes that have ITT tech as the most recent teaching experience or the most dominant with regards of time spent teaching for ITT tech on them. For all those who are taking a breath and want to start saying, 'I taught at ITT tech but ran screaming', my recommendation is going to be 'take ITT tech off your resume then'.

My team's conclusion was that ITT tech taught classes at the middle school, max at the poorly funded high school, level. That is unacceptable for us.

"Sounds like some bit their lips ...."

Tore hair out, stole tea bags from staff lounge, ground teeth, had trouble sleeping. Lied to family and friends about where they worked. What other symptoms of stress?

Former fellow adjuncts are telling me they are feeling much better now!

Yes, that 8000 must have included summer adjuncts? Another mystery--who was counted? Will never know. Modany trying to inflate impact of campus closure on workforce?

But around 100 adjuncts on active list for my campus --lots of burnout and turnover. Only 20 used each quarter.

Valid question -- are there reputable for profits? What definition of "for profit" is under consideration?

ITT -tech is over the top fraud, one giant marketing scheme. Publicly traded private school. But it is ridiculous to assume that any college which is not non-profit is following that same trajectory.

Is it the rule of thumb that publicly traded education companies are bad? I am inclined to think so.

But many for profit schools are not publicly traded, There are lots of small for profit schools.

What good schools are out there? What good schools are former faculty finding?

This was a side income for me, still with my current company. Not impacted that much, I feel for our students though

"Most adjuncts I worked with were supportive of ITT-Tech, in faculty meetings, etc. Some were vocal cheerleaders."

Sounds like some bit their lips and others were fools. Our faculty smiled sweetly at the admin types and let rip when the door was closed.

The average education among faculty was simply far higher than on the admin side of the house and faculty could smell the BS a mile away.

Even using your own numbers as the average the 8000 would have easily included adjuncts.

You would seriously work for another for-profit college? The Kool Aid didn't work the first time?
