Layoffs

Does anyone know for sure if there will be many more layoffs within the subsea services western region? If so, will this consist of shop personnel as well?

Want to say that as a past Engineer at FMC in Erie that I learned more about the product line and mechanical designs in general from the hard working people on the shop floor running machines and turning wrenches than I did from any text book or classroom in college. To the arrogant SOB that views those people as "Wrench Turning Monkeys", maybe you should meet one of them for a beer after work some evening and call them that to their face.

Bet you are one of the arrogant spoon fed Engineers that can do any math problem in the world but couldn't change a spark plug in your lawn mower. Those people turning wrenches already forgot more about the FMC product line than you'll ever know.

Let's get real. Being able to rehire shop workers isn't the biggest priority. They hired them by the droves from 2012-2015. Plus you can hire a monkey for 10 bucks an hr to turn any wrench. What they need to worry about is the time it takes to hire and train an engineer to get up to speed with your products fast enough to deliver a product on time. All that standardization bs will only get them so far. When jobs come back the new engineers still will be useless for at least a good year, maybe 1.5 years. When they need to deliver now now now. Guess what? Quality will be thrown out the window and customers will just avoid the product. I've seen it happen with Anadarko.

Actually, I was wrong about one thing... Lay offs are starting today carrying on through the end of the month. I bet not one Manager has taken a pay cut. Many CEO's have been the first in other companies to take pay cuts up to 25%! Greed...

Here comes their empty bag of talent to carry forward in their lucrative careers, for some it that could be short lived.

Layoffs will happen the last 2 weeks of this month. Surface Technologies Management has failed to have any foresight to prepare for the change in market conditions, which should have began 2 years ago. Bonuses should have been suspended, pay cuts for ALL, in addition to many other common sense cost saving measures to keep the talent pool onboard. Instead, they are losing the experience and wisdom of tenured staff. I volunteered for a pay cut including forgoing any bonus 2 months before I was laid off. My Managers (can't call them Leaders) replied that they did not want their pay cut or to lose their bonuses. So now, the failing management will be left holding an empty bag while the Leaders are walking out the door. An MBA does not bring common sense, or wisdom. That comes with time and experience. Good luck to all the fine people who are left October 1, 2016.

Shop workers are first. Because they are expendable. Work can be sent to a job shop just as easy. If oil ever comes back. Shop workers will crawl back as always or hire from out of state or even out of country. In the meantime. We save money, benefits and headaches.

The people at the top don't care about how the place will operate if and when demand for services rise. By that time it will be someone else's problem and the ones making todays decisions will be riding a golden parachute to their vacation homes.

If the shop workers are the first to go.....then why do we need planners, engineers for the parts, warehouse personnel, office personnel, the shop workers will be the last ones to go!

Yes no one is safe. 3q numbers are in. They are bad. Cutting personal and cost is a given. Shop workers will be first to go.
