Thread regarding Cisco Systems Inc. layoffs

"I SURVIVED LR 2016" - Now what?

You survived the 2016 LR. Now what? Which one of these best describes your situation.

I am going to:

  1. Stay. I still believe in Cisco and I feel the best days are ahead. #NeverABetterTime

  2. Stay. I'm too invested in Cisco and am too tired and/or old to start over at this point

  3. Hang in until my bonus payout and RSUs mature and then start looking around a little bit

  4. Hang in until my bonus payout and RSUs mature and then start looking around ACTIVELY!

  5. I'm already looking and am gone at the first opportunity regardless of payouts. #HairOnFire

I survived as I have the last 6 years and last 5 layoffs (IIRC), but finally I found a position with a different company where I am not going backwards, i.e. back to tech support, and am making a 33% base pay jump.

I suggest everyone be looking for what they think will give them happiness. Don't stay longer that 3 years so that you can get paid. Cisco is terrible at raises and the annual layoffs will continue, just my opinion.

1 is just nonsense for a company doing annual culling of talent. If you avoid change for too long, life has a way of forcing change upon you, so take charge of your own path before somebody else does. With that in mind, 2 isn't an option and just makes the eventual transition that much harder. 3 is just the early stages of 4. 4 is ok for some, kills time; but 5 cuts to the quick and gets you to your next great opportunity quickest. 6 is what will invariably kill Cisco.

make sure your skills are current so you can do #5. The only IOS anyone cares about is in a non-android phone. Java, Python, Web skills are in demand.

If you choose #4 then you are making yourself useless. Just hanging around doing nothing would do no value addition. Tech Industry is dynamic so to survive I would recommend constantly train yourself on different techs.
