Thread regarding Staples Inc. layoffs

How can people work for so little benefit! The 401(k) has gotten worse.

For people out there thinking about working at Staples. Think about this.

  1. The company will match only once you are fully vested, which should only take 4 to 5 yrs if memory serves me correct.

  2. The company will match 50 cents on the dollar for the first 3% of your money which you put into the fund.

  3. They will only match the money at the end of the year.

  4. If you leave before the end of the year they keep the money (low life's trying to hold you in the company for a lousy 1.5% of your money)

Don't join, and leave when you can. There are great benefits out there just waiting for you. Find a new company and then leave on your terms not theirs. There is no advantage to staying, every year you are losing more and more money. I got one hell of a bump in my pay with my company match (only after 1 year!)

Store staff - start looking and get out. They will be closing more stores each year to hit their target for 2020.

As they do so, several things will happen. They will harass or fire people to get them out before closures to avoid severance and UI expenses. The severance policy will be cut back to 1 week per year, max 5 weeks to cut costs on expected layoffs. Payroll in stores that remain open will be cut drastically, GMs will be "expected" to work 60-70 hr weeks normally and more for PI and BTS.

Opportunities for advancement will shrink to nothing. Bonuses and raises will be nonexistent (except for execs). Illness from stress will be common as expectations become even more unrealistic and constant negative emails and threats from RVPs and DMs become an hourly thing.

"What have you done for me today" will be the constant mantra as field managers micro manage store staff in effort to protect their own jobs.

It won't get better, just continually worse. This company, at least retail, is done.

First, my condolences to those of you still with the company. It's a slow, anguish filled, failing environment you are working in. The company on the brick and mortar side is slowly coming to its' death. It could have been saved but I fear that ship has sailed UNLESS you get a company with GREAT LEADERS to buy the company out. I do not see that happening.

Regarding 401K IT IS A JOKE. Don't invest in it, take your money and invest it yourself or through a financial adviser. When the company goes belly up, do you think there will funds to pay you off? I think not. Don't think this can happen? See other failed corporations. Take the money you put in your 401k and invest it yourself. WITHDRAW TODAY THE LONGER YOU WAIT THE MORE YOU COULD POTENTIALLY LOSE!

Get out of there, soon! Staples will continue to strip away benefits, raises and bonuses to all except the execs, who will get increases. It will get worse, far worse, never better!

Right now it's decreases to 401k contributions, partial or no bonuses, increases to health insurance costs while cutting coverage, and lack luster raises.

Soon (next year) it will be salary freezes or reductions, layoffs and cuts to the severance policy. The execs only care about their big payday at the end, everyone else is fodder to keep the company running just a little longer.

The iceberg has been struck, the hull breached and the bow is dipping below the waterline. Man up, seize a lifeboat and get off the sinking ship.

Company matches outside of Staples are awesome compared to the amount that they gave you at Staples! I now get matched at 4% of my Salary, plus a 1% discretionary for a total of 5%!!!

Staples associates wake up and find something better, just because you are still there is not a good thing, especially if you are in Broomfield or Framingham!

Staples a dying company... not worth staying there unless you are one of the C level execs making a cash grab before the death throes begin. If you are looking for a job do not waste your time on this turd of a company,
