Giant Eagle Corporate Employees Layoffs 2016 and 2017

Giant Eagle is getting rid of 450 corporate employees. There are 1,200 TOTAL! That's not a 1% reduction. Giant Eagle lied and gave news false information to hide what they are doing to their people. Monday they gave 5 days to voluntarily leave.

Every day they threaten or try to scare people into leaving. The latest Giant Eagle scare message was NO flexible work arrangements effectively immediately.....

I work at an Ohio store and they are going down hill fast. They just came out with a way to cut hours by giving the cash office jobs to self checkouts and coordinators. There's no daily drawer counts. So there is usually one person working customer service all night, lucky if you even get a break or go to the restroom, and they expect us to remain courteous and customer friendly. The hours got cut and we usually have only 2 cashiers open and 12 registers. If someone calls off the whole place falls apart!! The mgt doesn't care either and we get the brunt of complaints working at store level!! Also if you get hurt expect long drawn out court hearings, they will treat you like a criminal and don't care if you have been a long upstanding employee!!

I was employed as a tech for over 13 years and got the call I'm no longer needed! This after falling in one of their stores, injured my back and been under dr care for almost two years now! Yes I still went to work everyday in pain and yes I was made fun of by management ! And now I'm no longer in that account ! I hope they all lose their jobs ! Upper management that is!

Giant Eagle (OK Grocery) was a horrible company to work for! I left earlier this year after repeated complaints about the guys hitting on me and the overall g-- culture in there. Somehow I was the bad guy for being straight. Racism is also rampant throughout the company. Workers started hanging sock monkeys by the neck. The supervisors wouldn't even say anything! Most blacks in there were scared to report it and those that did, H.R. started looking for reasons to fire them. They wanted to settle out of court but the offer was too low to accept with any dignity. Horrible company who takes it's workers for granted! I cant wait till Aldi's and Walmart takes them out..

What makes all of this even more amazing is that director level and above were paid the long term incentive bonus for company performance last month! That's a FULL YEAR's salary paid all at once as a bonus. Lucky for me I got paid that last month and took the buyout this month. I have enough years that I received a full 2 years of salary between bonus and buyout just to leave this godforsaken place.

Can you imagine working in a place almost your whole life, getting up every day, even in the snow in the winter, being there on time, dedicated, putting up with numerouse daily customer complaints, unfair job descriptions, management cutbacks, employee cutbacks, etc..... hoping for your retirement or other benefits and maybe even a party or a thank you cards and dinner and sad goodbyes only to find out you have to choose to leave before your time is up or have the fear of being escorted out any day? Thats not right! These people have been robbed of fairness !! Unreal They need to have a proper fair well and thank you for all the years you gave us fair well party with benefits!

I heard that they did not get the 450 to voluntarily leave but under 150. I heard that some might have been taken out on Friday and will start Monday.

Haven't seen much on tv about it lately, perhaps the shock has worn off? Or they don't think its worth covering anymore. Actually I thought I would see more posts on this as well.

Most businesses have their problems too. I like the Giant Eagle Expresses, good food, quick choices, gas.

I like my grocery store for the most part. I don't want to be without it. I hope they can get it all straightened out and that the employees let go find better jobs soon. I know some of the people in the stores over the years and they are real nice hard working employees. Love the hot foods bar and salad bar too. Saves me time in cooking on some days. See a lot of elderly get their food there too.

I feel bad for those being let go. I think some are probably happy though to be out of there.

I see a threat at all in any of this. I see people caring. I see people expressing their opinions.

"I suggest everyone reads the New Testament in the Bible and get your values in order"

"Quit trying to stuff inordinate affection people down straight peoples throats."

"pay the price for management mistakes!!!!!!"

"Straight people HAVE a rright to object to choose not to agree with perverseness!!!!!! That's probably the root cause of why they are going downhill. Gods judgement probably."

"You have to decide who you will serve or else"

Is anyone else concerned by this? Is this the same person posting? Are they conveying a threat?

This seems like a dejected person threatening people to "get your values in order" for holy "judgement"

These kind of posts are the same smoking guns before workplace shootings. In this day and age, someone needs to take this seriously.

Most of supervisors at warehouses were workers compensation fraud cases. They provide no new ideas but try to fire as many people as they can to justify their job. Go to the Rivers or Meadows and see them gambling while lounging on their bad backs.

Laura has no skills at being CEO. She just a spoiled Jewish Princess whose Daddy gave her his chair when he retired. Her father is a great man and was wonderful to work for when he was CEO. Since she took over everyone has been miserable. She should take the voluntary severance herself and get the hell out of the way.

Laura has told us we are to execute firings on Monday for a third of the corporate staff. They ARE planning another around. For those affected, know we fought. Laura Karet sees glory in proving she brought "profitability" despite "difficult expansion outcomes due to retail climates." YOU WILL BE LET GO MONDAY!!! Disgusting ethics at the highest levels of this company.

Supervisors at warehouse used to work on their side jobs in the office or play on computer. Over staffing is common in management. Money spent for nothing.

Those that did not sign up to ... VOLUNTARILY LEAVE ??? huh???Voluntarily??? ....... rumors are that soon maybe next week they will come in and just take you out( those that did not sign will get axed!!!) so no one knows whose on the chopping block...This is a very cruel company that the employees have to pay the price for management mistakes!!!!!! Sell some buildings ..not the people that need the jobs!!!

.........................and I agree that perversity is not diversity and should not be FORCED for people to accept perversity....Don't celebrate that SIN at ALL! But GE does. I mean yes, be nice but people have a right to NOT agree with perversion from the norm!

The reduction is 30% of the Corporate workforce. This is because Store-to-Store Sales are DECLINING almost 3% versus last year, they spent $32M building the Indianapolis/Carmel Market District and it only has sales of $600K per week where it needs to sell $1.2M per week to break even. The CEO is a hot mess that does not know how to plan and execute a strategy. They spend tons of money on consultants to re-arrange the stores and implement a failed Customer Relationship Management System.

Just thinking..they will use the dedicated workers to train new ones for their jobs......How cruel....they will have to replace the workers or who is going to do the job going on now/? Going to dump more work on them before they go not even in their job description like u said. .then they have to go. ........wow.........anyone have a lawyer? They should also give them unemployment to ease the pain. Merry Christmas to all reading. Well, better offers from other places will be coming for those hurting Im sure, and a better company for you. keep looking!! Don't give up!! It will all work out!! Don't be afraid.

I have heard a lot over the years.....there Is supposed to be a job description but other work is dumped on employees without increase in wages and they don't stick to the work in the job description. There should be a union grievance. Heard there are employees that are on the cell phone all day and take 1 -2 hour lunches and the bosses dont say anything. They need to stop wasting hot foods in the stores. They need new managers. Not get rid of the faithful people that took the crap from them all these years and remained loyal( with not much increase in wages) Quit trying to stuff inordinate affection people down straight peoples throats. Straight people HAVE a rright to object to choose not to agree with perverseness!!!!!! That's probably the root cause of why they are going downhill. Gods judgement probably. They need to stop building other store( wasting money in that)s and build their employees lives. The older ones DESERVE their pensions, benefits, soc sec, and all they have sacrificed for and a lump payment should be offered to them. Giant Eagle, you need to pray and ask God forgiveness for your company.

Absolutely shameful! No respect for the loyal/dedicated employees. Thought GE leadership was better than this. These employees do not deserve this type of treatment. I guess they are no longer considered an employer of choice to work for in the Pittsburgh area. They are ruining a reputation that will be difficult to be repaired. Not to mention a huge loss in sales from the 450 employees who will be cut, including their families and friends. Do you think they will want to shop there after this type of treatment....
