Heard they've been giving projects away near cost to fool investors about backlogs, any truth to that?

Mom and pop shops yes. but really not really supposed to be doing jobs at cost or below if you're a publicly traded company. But they've never had a clue anyway. Just my honest opinion. Take it how you may.
It's called survival good thing you work for someone.
At times like this, there is really no margin in projects. There are too many hungry bidders, who will do jobs at cost or below just to keep their doors open. Now is the time you hope you haven't screwed your customers over, because there will be no business coming your way if you have.
That wouldn't be any surprise from what they have done in the past.
