I know that many of you have been making fun of IoT but I have a serious question right now - I'd like to start looking into home automation and wanted to see if anyone had a suggestion on how to kick this off. I know I need a hub and a bunch of 'things' (outlets, sensors, etc.) - any suggestions on what to buy first? I was thinking to start with a single bulb and a hub and to build from there.
Any suggestions?

I suggest you pull your head out of your butt and learn to use google or other forums.

IoT is a wet dream, not a revolutionary new market opportunity. Whatever you do, stay with equipment manufactures or an integrator (like Comcast or major alarm companies) who will be around and provide support.
Apple HomeKit seems to be the furthest along, but may still be an experiment vs. a real market they develop. Forget about Z-wave - it's never reached critical mass, imo.
Interest in hacking these system has only just begun. I don't want my lights going on and off because someone in Mumbai thinks it's amusing.
I started with a nest thermostat, Harmony remote hub for entertainment center, then go from there with outlets, security camera, locks and bulbs.
Add communications, to below, it will all be part of the google router, or intel router....lol
It will be energy, storage, security, automation
