Looks like ramped and in production, gives credibility to 7nm and 5 mm schedules at TSMC!

Looks like management transitions in TMG and LTD, ACT, and URM hires aren't good for leadership and execution.

Intel has had the process lead for a long time.

It hasn't helped us in ICF.

It hasn't helped in mobile - Atom phones are cancelled and modems are done on TSMC.

The lead is a moot point if your products s---.

The overwhelming trend is for computers to move away from desktops and laptops, where Intel is dominant, towards mobile computers like smartphones and tablets where Intel has no traction. There is less and less reason to own a desktop or laptop with each passing year.

Although TSMC 10nm is not as good as Intel 10nm, it is certainly better than Intel 14nm, which is the current node in production. Moreover, Intel completely loses the lead after 2016/2017 since TSMC will already be ramping 7nm by the time Intel gets to 10nm. At 7nm/5nm, the gap widens even further.

@rxx URM's themselves didn't kill anything. The focus on them and diversity instead of winning in the market certainly did though. And yes, ACT definitely gutted things all over the company. I bet BK is still clueless as to just how bad things are after ACT.

URM and ACTs is killing the cadence at Intel.

It was once said that Moore's Law won't end because of a physical limit but an economic one.

Intel trying to develop customer 22, 14 and now 10 and 7nm with singular focus on enabling x86 is busted. It was the correct strategy in the 90s and early the past decade, but this small ARMy and the little smartphone moved the economies of scale and successes to the foundry.

Today Samsung and TSMC have development and factories that tower over Intel's small effort in Hillsboro, what Intel calls HVM is like first phase of a five phase 10nm factory at Samsung and TSMC

@fej - TSMC is already looking at 3nm/1nm nodes in research. Not sure what type of technologies they will try, but it's generally agreed that for 5nm and below, planar transistors or finFETs will not be feasible, instead they are looking at stacked horizontal nanowires (also called gate all-around transistors). I think carbon nanotubes and a couple other technologies are being researched, but still have serious limitations.
