Eddie Lampert, Does his family even like him?

It must be a huge challenge, for Eddie, waking up every morning and trying to be a bigger a---hole then he was the day before. So far, he has done an excellent job, of it but, how long can he keep it going? All great things come to an end. Einstein, Curie, Tesla, Aristotle, Plato, Benjamin Franklin, Edison, Babe Ruth, Johnny Unitas, Pele, Enrico Caruso, Alexander Fleming, Dr. Freud, Dr. Spock, Brando, Bogart, Gable, etc. The list goes on and on, even the best, of the best eventually come to an end. What about our little Eddie? Without doubt, one of, if not, the biggest a---hole of all time. Don't get me wrong, I mean that, in a nice way. Does anyone expect, someone will ever surpass Eddie, as The World's Biggest A---Hole?

My opinion is that I'm sure Eddie's family loves him very much. In reading news articles on Sears I have learned some things about Eddie. His father died unexpectedly when he was 14. That apparently is his motivation to accomplish all he can before he dies and to make his father proud. In one article it said that on Eddie's wedding day "he looked up at the sky and said, how am I doing Dad?"

I'm not excusing his behavior of bad treatment of employees or how he screwed Kmart employees out of their retirement, I'm just trying to understand where he is coming from. His behavior is a case study and fascinating to me. Is it a personality disorder, or an unmet need from childhood or simply a person who is driven by materialism and greed without any regards for others? Many kids lose a parent when young and turn out fine. I know because it happened in my family. It must be exhausting to try to reach a goal that will never satisfy. The goal post will just keep moving another yard until it is reached and is moved yet again. There seems to be a hurt or void that he hasn't been able to fill.

As a parent myself, I would tell Eddie that yes, your father is very proud of you and all your accomplishments and most importantly of your family. There is no doubt that Eddie is a genius even if some call it an evil genius. But I would also tell him (speaking as a parent myself) that his father most of all would want him to be content and to be a good person. That's what all parents want for their children. If I had to choose for my children, happiness and virtue, versus wealth, no doubt I would choose the former.

Eddie's peak was about 11 years ago, when they were calling him the "next Warren Buffett" and he expected to be the future guru of corporate turnarounds. He should have stuck to stock trading. After SHC falls apart I expect he'll retire to his mansion to Florida, never to be seen in public again. He isn't likely to be poor, but any hope of being remembered for anything positive is long gone.
